(Almost) Famous (Mis) Quotes
I own and shoot a Parker-Hale replication of the three-band military match rifle with Whitworth's patent hexagonal rifling, copied almost instantaneously in the late 1850's by the likes of Kerr and Beasley. Examples of all three makers were used by the Confederacy with great effect during the WoNA. General Reynolds may have been felled by one such rifle on the second day of the BoG.

Some of the real Whitworth rifles that went to the Confederacy were fitted with Colonel Davidson's optical sight - what we today would call a telescopic sight. They were very low-powered by today's standards - about x2 or x2.5, maybe has high as x3. Their use, as you say, would hang closely on knowing the exact distances involved in their shooting. I shoot mine with a non-issue tang sight fitted out to 1200 yards in long-range muzzle loading, and I can't promise you that I'd get a twelve inch group at 800 yards, but fifteen out of twenty of my shots would be right in there, and that's a fact.

Collecting a 600gr paper-patched projectile in the noggin at 800 yards, when it is still hustling along at around 800 fps/835 ft lbs, is going to leave a mark, for sure.

George Custer tells his Aid as hundreds of Indians pour onto the field.

"Sir... that's a metric shit ton of really pissed off Indians heading this way." replied 1st. Lieutenant William W. Cooke, Adjutant to Custer.

Cooke was KIA, and was found near Custer.

Allegedly, Cooke was scalped twice, once for the hair on his head and once for half his mustache.

"I fear all we have done is to awaken a sleeping giant and fill him with a terrible resolve."

Although the quotation may well have encapsulated many of his real feelings about the attack, there is no printed evidence to prove Yamamoto made this statement or wrote it down.[

"Careful planning is the key to every successful endeavor." General G.A. Custer

I have long since forgotten the books or their author, but there was a series of science fiction books that had these types of "quotes" heading every chapter including some version of the two quoted above.

Well, as long as the the heart of rock & roll is still beating, I'm good... and Huey did mention Cleveland in the original version, but it was at the the end of the song.
