Received a strange book which I did not order. Did anyone else get one?
Today I received this book:
"Pistols Of The Warlords" It is written by Ian McCollum and its coffee table sized. Lots of typos on the cover and there was odd stuff included with the book: A map of Chinese warlord territories and a cocktail recipe. An invoice was with the book showing no cost for the book but $12 for shipping. Some googling would indicate there was some sort of Kickstarter campaign to get the book published by the people who do the Forgotten Weapons site on YouTube.
I did not order the book. I did not participate in the Kickstarter. I dont actually have much interest in the subject matter. The publisher's website shows several different styles of the book, all for over $100. Which I dont owe and won't pay. Anyone else get one of these books?

I saw the postings here on SF from 2021 but nothing else more recent.

Don't fret.

McCollum is a solid guy. He owns Forgotten Weapons, and is so well respected European governments are opening their firearms technical collections so he can do a short video on weapons where they have the last one. Look him up on YerTub or Rumble.

How you got the book I do not know, unless it was a gift of which you were unaware.

I am willing to get a call to HeadStamp Publishing will get the mystery resolved, and either a gift to you or an RMA for its return.

Same book as stylophiles posted! And I saw the YouTube video for it. The paperwork that came with it is a packing slip. So maybe an actual bill is forthcoming. I just checked all my credit cards to see if there is an associated charge. Nope. Nada.
So its a mystery! I will send the publisher an email and see what they say.

They're only shipping the special purple Kickstarter Preorder edition of the book at this point. This means to have gotten a copy of that version of the book, an order had to have been placed as part of the initial Kickstarter campaign in May 2021.

Either someone else preordered it for you as a gift, or you preordered one for yourself back when the Kickstarter was live ~1.5 years ago and just don't remember.

So no, a bill won't be showing up for it... That's not how either Headstamp Publishing or Kickstarter works.

And it's not a nefarious plot to fill your head with Chinese propaganda either. Wink

I think I would remember ordering a $100+ book covering a topic which for me, anyway, is obscure. Even if it was 2021. And I am quite impatient when ordering stuff online, so Kickstarter is not an option. I guess it's an error or gift. I just sent them an email, so we will see.

Yes, it seems you are the recipient of a nice gift. Enjoy.

And unless things have really changed in this country, you are not obligated to pay for anything shipped to you, which you did not order.

Anything sent to you in the mail addressed to you is yours to keep and use. You can't be put on the hook for this "shipping charge." You also had (it's too late now) the option to mark the package "refused" or "unwanted" and send it back.

Such brash action would only serve to anger the warlords and likely would result in a long and bloody seige.

That is bloody for any Chinese Warlords dumb enough to actually fire one.

Especially their favorite Mouser 89 pistol.

It is where the idea of the sound of one hand clapping comes from.

Update: The Headstamp Publishing folks responded to my request for more info in a very prompt and professional manner. Kudos!
And my mystery benefactor is: My own kid! Who has undoubtedly forgotten he has ordered it. I had not considered him as he is working full time and going to college, and it keeps him fully occupied.
Anyway, looks like mystery solved! I am now on the lookout for a Broomhandle
Wauser!

That’s a funny story and I’m glad it wasn’t you who ordered the book and forgot.

I’m on the lookout for me forgetting things.

We met up with relatives a few weeks ago. Just shooting the breeze, my nephew related how he was enjoying the whiskey I gave him. I asked which. He said the one in the nice bottle that even had my name etched on it. Now, I know that bottle. It was a bottle I filled on a trip to Tennessee. I would recommend giving that away but I don’t have any memory of having done so. Not that I don’t trust my nephew; it’s just curious since i literally am drawing a blank.

"It did not really matter what we expected from life, but rather what life expected from us. We needed to stop asking about the meaning of life, and instead to think of ourselves as those who were being questioned by life – daily and hourly. Our answer must consist not in talk and meditation, but in right action and in right conduct. Life ultimately means taking the responsibility to find the right answer to its problems and to fulfill the tasks which it constantly sets for each individual." Viktor Frankl, Man's Search for Meaning, 1946.
