I'm looking for a small/discrete dash camera to install in my wife's car. It will be hard wired and left in place high on the windshield so it's not easily visible.

I do want sound recording.
I don't want something with a screen on it.
I don't want something that she needs to mess with to record.
I don't care about it recording when not driving (like parking lot bumps).
I just want something that will record when driving in case an incident occurs, that I can check on periodically to ensure it's working.

So far this Garmin dash cam mini looks like it's exactly what I need, however some of the reviews are poor. Is there anything else similar in size that would be a better choice in terms of reliability?

Street Guardian.

I went through several brands and form factors before getting my Street Guardian unit, which has been flawless.

Checks all of your boxes.

See my thread here (https://sigforum.com/eve/forums/a/tpc/f/320601935/m/5720006964) for details on exactly that camera. What made it easy was the connector. If you can find one for your wife's car, it's a super easy mod.

Thus the metric system did not really catch on in the States, unless you count the increasing popularity of the nine-millimeter bullet.

Thinkware and BlackVue are arguably the best dash cam makers. Check out https://www.blackboxmycar.com

Garmin works but doesn’t win head to head challenges. In other words, the value for money isn’t there.

I have the Viofo A129 GPS Dual Lens Dash Cam. At the time, it was the #1 recommended budget dual camera on DashCamTalk. I like DashCamTalk because those maniacs will have 3 or more installed at once and you can see the difference in identical circumstances.

One of the reasons that I upgraded to a unit with both front and rear cameras (previously had a StreetGuardian front only camera) was to increase the chance of recording someone sideswiping me (other is to record someone rear ending me).

Since you've had it for several months now, how has it held up? Yes I will certainly look for one of those harness plugs that you shared.

I have one set up as a rear view. I paired it with a 66w in the front

Both work Very well. The mini is rediculously small

There probably are better, but I’ve been very happy. Simplistic to set up
