I never rented an apartment. Upon graduating high school, at my father's encouragement, I bought a cheap small house near WVU campus and turned it into a rooming house for college students. With only a 6 1/2' ceiling (less in places) the cellar was unfit to rent out so it's where I lived. 4 rooms were rented for $40 each with one double for $60. This included utilities and garbage. The house cost $6,000. My father loaned me $3000 interest free for a down payment so I could borrow $6,000 from a bank at 10% interest (because it was a "commercial loan") which gave me $3,000 for start up and new windows, exterior paint, putting up interior partitions, etc. No car is as much fun to drive, as any motorcycle is to ride.

$300 a month, in college, moved to one that was close to $400 but a better apartment, eventually bought a 3 brm townhouse and the payment was $275 a month! Moved to SF with a job, apartment was $700 a month down the peninsula in Foster City, a shock after moving from KY... Edit: Worked nights cleaning offices to earn money for car, house, beer, pizza,This message has been edited. Last edited by: HRK,

3rd year in college. HS buddy & I got a 3br/3bath house on 1/2 acre for $500/mo. This would have been 2006 I think. House was in rough shape [old wood-framed house on locks. A few places you could see the ground through the floor], but it was cheap; especially compared to the $450-600/mo 2br/1ba trailer park specials. Lived there 2 years & move to some apartments to split our commute difference. 2 br/2 ba, I think it was something like $600/mo. Ended up meeting my wife there, so that worked out. We had gone to a newer complex [advertised a 55" flat screen tv in every apartment]. Sat down with the leasing office to look at floor plans & were talking about employment. We were both doing neighborhood/site security, making something like $7.25/hr. She told us we made too much to live there ![]() Genuinely thought she was joking, as I watched Mercedes/BMW/Lexus cars rolling in/out of the complex & we pulled up in my buddy's 1194 Ranger with nearly 300k on the clock. Does college count? I lived in the dorms for the first two years and in an apartment thereafter. My wife and I were married in 1988. Our first and only apartment was in the city while I was in law school. We both worked part time. My wife was looking for full-time. It was only $200+ per month, which was pretty cheap. We soon found out why: It was in an all brick 4-family flat with full south-western exposure. During the summer the bricks absorbed all the heat of the day and it got up to 100+ degrees multiple times that summer. It did not have air conditioning, but we bought a window unit for the bedroom. Otherwise, there's no way we could have slept. "Some things are apparent. Where government moves in, community retreats, civil society disintegrates and our ability to control our own destiny atrophies. The result is: families under siege; war in the streets; unapologetic expropriation of property; the precipitous decline of the rule of law; the rapid rise of corruption; the loss of civility and the triumph of deceit. The result is a debased, debauched culture which finds moral depravity entertaining and virtue contemptible." -- Justice Janice Rogers Brown "The United States government is the largest criminal enterprise on earth." -rduckwor

friend and I were going to get an apartment, but my parents has split, Dad kept the house, and he basically told me why pay rent? my brother had moved in with my Mom, Dad was pretty much out catting around a lot, and my schedule was odd too (college and working full time) so I stayed, when I was dating my wife, she had a 2 bedroom apt with her cousin, don't recall what rent was for her, and I am sure her mom and dad were supplementing if she was short, I stayed there 2 or 3 nights a week, https://chandlersfirearms.com/chesterfield-armament/

1979, in Germany. I was in the Army and rented a one room (not bedroom) apartment in what was a converted garage in a fairly nice house. Cooked on a two burner propane stove with a bottle, the bathroom was a half-bath, a sink and a toilet. 80 bucks a month furnished.

1987 $225/mo. split with room mate for the first few months. It was an upstairs portion of an older house, there were five apartments total I think. The first year I left home I lived off what I saved up from working my first job in the last year of high school -- box boy at one of the two stores in town. It's kinda blurry that far back, but I more of less figured out ways to make ends meet (barely) for most of my twenties. Then life changed several times and here I am.

1997 Apartment was pretty damn nice, in a nice neighborhood. I had a job with a fence company, making $400 a week in salary. Rent was $425 a month, and included water and trash. Address was: 4340 Duck Creek Drive, Garland TX. 75043

1985, in-law apt over a two car garage. $350 Lehigh County, PA. Right after H.S. graduation, family gave me one month to get out. Got a job making military antenna and pcb laminate circuit boards, microtome machine parts, and truck parts. Odd mix at a job machine shop. Started about $6.5/hr and 24 months later at $11/hr.

My first apartment was in Jacksonville NC in 1999 and I think I paid about $415 a month. It was a pretty nice two bedroom apartment just outside of the main gate to Lejeune. My current 3 bedroom apartment in SWFL costs 2500 a month. It’s a pretty good sized apartment with a real nice screened in porch and it’s a good size but holy shit it’s too much money. I can’t wait to buy a house. “Everybody wants a Sig in the sheets but a Glock on the streets.” -bionic218 04-02-2014

My first apartment was in 18th century grist mill. A friend was looking for a roommate in a two bedroom apartment in the mill. It had a living room, dining room and a storage room along with a spacious fully equipped kitchen. Rent was $600 a month,$300 each. We were both whitewater boaters and bicyclists so we had room for boats and bikes. It was drafty and cold in the winter but the bathroom was over the furnace for the entire mill so, if one remembered to close the bathroom door when going to bed, the bathroom was wonderfully warm for a morning shower. It was was a great place for a 20 something. Let me help you out. Which way did you come in?

Back in 1990 (which seems like yesterday) I moved into the end unit of a triplex for $150 per month. The three units had a shared basement (side of a hill) and it included a washer and dryer. Those were some fun times. Cheers~
