So I went with Mickey Thompson Baja Boss A/Ts in 285/70/17 (33x11.5) on Summit Off-road Stryker wheels. The wheels are 17x9 with a 0 offset. I left 275/60/20 (33x10.5) Michelin LTX A/T2s on factory 20x8 wheels. The Michelin tires are a fantastic highway tire with pretty decent MILD off-roading traction and Outstanding traction on pavement in wet and snow. Got a screw right where the sidewall meets the tread so not one I am good with riding on a plug. Was planning to do new wheels and tires next year because I wanted to drop to 17s for more sidewall and 17” tires are a fair amount cheaper. But Mr screw sped up my plans. This wheel and color combination was my 3rd choice but they had it in stock and I am liking the combo far more than I thought and they were on sale!! So got them mounted and balanced today! So far the first impression of these tires is excellent. Granted I gained 1.5” of sidewall but the truck has a much smoother ride than before and it was not unsmooth at all. It rained last night but not today and have yet to be able to break these tires loose from a start on the damp pavement. We’ll see when I get them in the actual rain but they have tons of siping so hopefully they are good. Biggest worry was noise being that these tires are pretty aggressive. Around town driving can’t really tell much difference. Hit 50mph and you know you longer have the Michelins on the ground. It’s not bad at all 2 notches up on the radio with the windows up and you are back to where you were. With the windows down it is more noticeable. I believe one will just get used to it. I have not put the center caps on yet. My kiddos school has a pretty slick STEAM Lab and have a really nice 3d Scanner and a couple of cool printers. So going to make some custom ones that I think may look better. So far I am quite happy. I’ll keep this thread updated like I did with the Falken Wildpeaks a few years back. Next projects are Rock Sliders, Limited Slip Differential, and a winch This message has been edited. Last edited by: Black92LX, ———————————————— The world's not perfect, but it's not that bad. Looks great. Aggressive look without the noise. Love Mickey Thompson they’ve been around.

Looks great, nice contrast with the wheel color. Tundras just look better with an AT tire over highway tires. I almost went for the LTX A/T, but it's my wife's truck so it got M/S2s Haven't decided what the Explorer will get when it's time, but M/S2 or PS AS4 are my leading choices with the A/T2 as a maybe if they're available in size. Without the obnoxious noise. They are certainly louder. It’s a bit of a hum but less than I was expecting honestly. This thing had a worn out set of Mastercraft ATs when I bought it and they were worse than this. ———————————————— The world's not perfect, but it's not that bad. I'll have to look next time I see him, my BIL has a pretty aggressive looking AT on his Tundra & they're almost highway tire quiet on the road. His is a 2wd 2015 TSS pkg. The Enemy's gate is down.

Black - do you prefer the Mickey Thompsons to the Falkens?

Looks really good! Any idea what the weight difference is between the stock wheels/tires and the new ones are? Too early to tell for sure. However, I think they look better and they are made in the USA. They are cheaper than the Falkens and these ride softer but the Falkens were an 18” tire so not exactly an exact comparison. The Falkens were quieter but not by much. We’ll see over the next few months which performs better.
Manufacturer specs claim that my new wheels weigh 24 pounds and my tires weigh 44 pounds. Michelin states my old tire weighs 45 pounds. I’ll weigh one of my old wheels sometime this week but I am guessing overall I shaved a few pounds as the 20” limited wheel is a bit heavy though I am not sure on an actual weight. ———————————————— The world's not perfect, but it's not that bad. I liked the Falkens on my Rubicon Gladiator as far as mileage was concerned but the are heavy tires, in my case 64# for the 285/70R17’s. I recently got a set of Toyo’s in 35/11.5-17 that also weigh 64#’s but are 2 inches taller. The truck sits just right now after adding the AEV suspension kit. ------------------ Eddie Our Founding Fathers were men who understood that the right thing is not necessarily the written thing. -kkina

Looks like the Wildpeak in my size is 6 lbs heavier than the Mickey. A big gripe I had with my Falkens is they turned brown quickly. Could not get them back to black. My Wildpeaks were made in Thailand. Years ago I needed so cheap tires for a Mustang I was going to sell eventually. So I bought some Riken (owned by Michelin) Raptors. To my shock for the price in a 16” tire at the time was like $70 they were awesome for a V6 Mustang. They too were made in Thailand and they turned brown as well. ———————————————— The world's not perfect, but it's not that bad. If we got each other, and that's all we have. They will get louder as they age, but hopefully it won't be too bad since they're quieter than you thought they would be right now. "The people hate the lizards and the lizards rule the people." "Odd," said Arthur, "I thought you said it was a democracy." "I did," said Ford, "it is." "So," said Arthur, hoping he wasn't sounding ridiculously obtuse, "why don't the people get rid of the lizards?" "It honestly doesn't occur to them. They've all got the vote, so they all pretty much assume that the government they've voted in more or less approximates the government they want." "You mean they actually vote for the lizards." "Oh yes," said Ford with a shrug, "of course." "But," said Arthur, going for the big one again, "why?" "Because if they didn't vote for a lizard, then the wrong lizard might get in."

Unfortunately that is part of the game. Hopefully it will be pretty gradual and won’t notice it too bad. But again these are exceptionally quiet for as aggressive as they are. ———————————————— The world's not perfect, but it's not that bad. If we got each other, and that's all we have. Thanks, Black. My current set of Yokohoma Geolanders have a lot of tread left but they are over six years old and will need replacing sooner rather than later. I was going to go with Falkens when it's time but am now thinking the Thompsons will be the better choice.

So today marks 1 week with the Mickey’s and a little over 500 miles which is super rare as it usually takes me 3 weeks to do 500 miles. But had to take the boy to the Ville yesterday and went down to the cabin today. So got some extended interstate driving. No real rain yet. Had one day where it rained just slightly and the roads were damp. The tires gripped very very well under light to normal throttle. I goosed it around a corner and got them to break loose slightly but that was intentional and I really had to get on it in a turn. The noise is not bad at all. Yes they are noticeably louder than the Michelins but they were whisper quiet. These seem to be the loudest between 45 and 65 mph on two lane country roads (which happens to be what I drive most) this is pavement that is more gritty and rough than most of your regular asphalt paved streets. Interstate travel between 70 and 80 was excellent. They are stable and do not wander at all. When I left this morning it was 34* and they gripped just fine when I returned home it was 70* and they rode and felt just the same. I did some two lane mountain roads that are a bit curvy and I would say I cut my speed back in the curves by about 5 mph. The Michelins seemed to corner better but they had 1.5” less of sidewall so that is not exactly surprising. The Michelins seem to roll bit smoother on flat pavement but the Mickeys have a softer ride on the bumps. But again they have an extra 1.5” of side wall. As for gas mileage I have never actually calculated it in this truck. It’s a 5.7L V8 lifted with oversized tires. You just fill it up and don’t even look at the screen. However, would I leave with a full tank of gas drive to the cabin and back I have about 1/4 of a tank on my return with the old setup. The same was today. So if there is less mileage it is negligible. So far very very happy with the tires in good weather driving on all sorts of roadways. Hoping that continues in the rain, snow, and off-road conditions. ———————————————— The world's not perfect, but it's not that bad. If we got each other, and that's all we have. Someone asked earlier about over all weight difference and finally got a chance to weigh my old setup. 20”x8” Toyota OEM limited wheels with 275/60/20 Michelin LTX A/T2 weighed in at 86 pounds. 17”x9” Summit Offorad Stryker wheels with 285/70/17 Mickey Thompson Baja Boss A/Ts weighed in at 72 pounds. So 14 pounds a corner is a nice change ———————————————— The world's not perfect, but it's not that bad. If we got each other, and that's all we have. I will be your brother, and I'll hold your hand. Black - All I can say is - That is a BEAUTIFUL Truck. Love the new shoes also. Those really set off that truck’s color, tinted windows, black trim package, step-side rails, and bed cover. That is my “bucket list” truck. As the grandkids get older my Toyota Tacoma back seat continues to get smaller and we sat in a 2022 Tundra model and the front and back seat areas were HUGE compared to mine. That is a buy once truck for the amount of driving I do. My hope is to own one before I die if funding allows. Anyway - Just wanted to say that with the new tires and wheels, you have one seriously nice truck (even with the factory ones).

Crazy that they're that much lighter. But, OE wheels tend to be pretty heavy. Hated rotating the tires on our Flex, those 20s were like boat anchors. Haven't done the Expedition yet, just put new tires on it & my little racing jack won't even get a wheel off the ground. Good excuse for new tools. The Enemy's gate is down.

Tires look great, so does the truck! I have an appointment next week to put a set of boring Michelin LTX M/S's on my Tundra but you have me rethinking that..... .

If you don’t go off-road much you are loosing quite a bit by getting these compared to the Michelins. Unless you just have to have the look. Loving the tires but if I had strictly a highway truck I doubt I would have these. ———————————————— The world's not perfect, but it's not that bad. If we got each other, and that's all we have.
