Updated with question added in the post - Government Employies free Microsoft Office??
I saw a post here a long time ago where government employees can check with their Government email account to check if they can get a free Microsoft Office Suite. If they can how do they get the program and license it. This is for my older brother who is working from home with a borrowed lap top from work. He has purchased a new desk top computer and this suite could be very helpful.

Thanks

Roy

Update: see question in post.

Thanks

I’m not sure if it is still a program that is used. Now with office 365, there really isn’t a need for it.
It was called the HUP. Home Use Program. You could use your work account and get office for your home computer. This would make you a better worker bee, as you would be using the same products at home and work.
I liked it because it was free office products.
Now with 365, you are licensed up to three computers with your account, depending on how your organization is set up.

In general if you have a Professional Office 365 account at work, the license is extended to you to download and use Office 365 on your personal computer. But it's only for you, cannot be given away, and is only to be used when your work account is not being used. This was also true of prior version but you had to apply for it. Now it's a lot easier. Every place I've worked, this has been available.

My wife is a teacher who works from home, and she gets the free MS Office with the sign in from her school email account. I was the one who set her up on my Mac Mini and my Windows laptop, but I don’t remember if I started with a link in her email or I went straight to the MS Office site.

How it works for other .gov entities, I don’t know.

The HUP program has changed a bit as mentioned. Now you can get Office 365 Professional for $69.99/year or the Personal version for $48.99. Tell him to search on the MS site for home use program, he should be able to find it. The old way was better since you owned for $9.95, but things change.

So is it an annual subscription as stated above??

Or is it downloadable from the company Office 365 login by clicking the get office 365 button to install it on the home machine.

I just checked my company email with Microsoft Home Use Program to receive an email from Microsoft saying that my employer does not have this option set up for me.

Next question is should I or possible my brother just purchase the Office 2019 Suite which seems rather very affordable.

We tried this HUP for my wife, who works for NIH. MS replied she was eligible. Office 365 was a subscription-based offer. Frown

Watch eBay. You can get an office key for like $10.
