GustoferI'd go with a bull snake, but not with the triangular head. Was it squarshed perhaps?

ridgeratIt would help to know where Mother In Law was when she saw it. Can she narrow down the area and state (or country)?

4MUL8RIf you would use the google app with its search function using images, you would be amazed. This app looked at her photo and suggested pacific gopher snake.

Although closely related, Bull Snakes' range doesn't extend to California. It's a Pacific Gophersnake.
ETA: Happier pic of a live gophersnake! Last night as I was leaving a local restaurant, I saw this young
Sonoran Gophersnake trying to get across the parking lot. Fearing it might get struck by another customer's vehicle, I picked it up and (after getting a takeout box from where I'd just eaten) I relocated it to an area down the road from this business and residences that were nearby. It was very mellow. No hissing or striking at all, just simply trying to get out of my grasp. Very cool snakes!

That looks to be it! I guess a non squashed version is more recognizable.

Pulli, remember when I said I'd love to grab a beer or two with you anywhere, but not go for a walk in the woods...
Nope.... Can't even go indoors with you now.
