The NC700X and the newer NC750X are very nice commuter bikes. That have all the ADV styling but aren't really intended for off road. They are both relatively new so I doubt you will find a cheap one that needs work. People who buy these aren't thrashing them and I suspect are very conscientious about maintenance. The people who buy these also probably own an Accord.

Here's a brand new 2015 NC700X for $3,500.

Sure you could save money buying a beater but when you consider it comes with a warranty plus new tires, battery, shocks, sprockets and chain, and you don't need to clean out the tank, flush coolant, set valves, etc. it could make sense. Plus if taken good care of it'll always be worth $2,500.

No car is as much fun to drive, as any motorcycle is to ride.

I have plenty of friends with HD's, so I am somewhat well versed in working on them already. Running joke from years ago was, since I had and rode the only BMW in what was a bunch of HD owners, I could go and get the parts when one of them spit out the bit on the side of the road. Razz

Again, this is more what I'm looking at if I went the route of buying a NC700X as a project. https://www.crashedtoys.com/lot/34102699 I've seen bikes sell on this site ridiculously cheap, so I think it is possible to acquire something like this, repair and upgrade it myself, and then enjoy it for a while, then sell is for what I have in it. But ultimately, that's not really the primary goal (i.e. flipping it). Going this route I get to have something to work on this winter that I shouldn't have to bury a ton of cash in.

If I were spending your $$$, I seriously look at the Suzuki DR400. Bigger than a 250, smaller than a +650cc, good enough power for around town and highway speeds.

It all depends on your riding style. More highway miles, you'll want a larger displacement bike. More backwoods, you'll want something smaller.

It's the nature of the beast, all these dual sports tend to have a very high seating position, and tend to have a very high center of gravity. The good news is there is a pretty good aftermarket following for any dual sport bikes, and for the most part they are easy to work on, with a lot of YouTube videos and forums.

Ok, something I did not know. Apparently Ducati makes a 950 Multistrada. Though it might be a tad bigger than I was originally considering, I absolutely dig the bigger Multistrata, and from what I've read so far, the 950 appears to be a great bike.

Biggest drawback around here is that all of the cheap buys have lost/missing title.
