It looks like my windows install is borked, can’t install certain apps, permissions are guffed up. I’m thinking i need to reinstall windows. I’ve read that i can do a “Reset this PC” and choose “keep my files”. I know i should back up everything first and I will but has anyone done this successfully? Is it a safe option to try? Any caveats? I’d really hate to lose programs that are no longer available. Thanks for the tips.

I recently reinstalled Win10, piece of cake. A couple very minor hiccups when done, easy to fix. https://www.youtube.com/watch?...WfA50fGS48IY&index=7 Set the controls for the heart of the Sun.

Yes, “Reset this PC” with “keep my files” is a good option. Just back up your stuff first to be safe. ___________________________________________________ in the 'Merica Navy they teach you to go pew pew pew... Luckily in the PNW they taught me to go BANG BANG BANG

10. My 4 year old computer is not eligible for upgrade to 11. My next computer will be a Mac and this one will just boot into its Linux partition. I’m done with these permissions issues that no one can figure out. I went to windows for a job in 2008 after being Mac only since 1994. It’s time to go back.

Thanks So run it as an Upgrade instead of using the Reset option to keep everything? I’ll try it. I remember that i had to call Microsoft because the license code wouldn’t work. As long as I don’t need to remember the code they gave me I’ll be good. What were the minor hiccups? In case, it’s something i shouldn’t do to my work computer.

Yes, I was worried about license problems but not the case for me anyway. The vid takes you to a MS link where a "media creation tool" will be downloaded, with such choices as saving one's data and apps. It takes a little while. I had one graphic program I use require its installation cd to get things up and running. So that and just a few actions that now have a sound associated with it. Very seldom and I've not bothered to disable them. Set the controls for the heart of the Sun.

I did this, went through the steps, waited a while, then it said “thanks for using the latest version of windows” and did nothing. ![]() Once I get all the stuff backed up, I’m going to try the reset from the control panel. AS my other thread says, I’m going back to Mac. I’m waiting for the 9/9 announcements though.

I have had the 'keep my files' option do weird things, like keep some files while others disappeared. BACK UP ANYTHING YOU DON'T WANT TO LOSE. It's a good 1st step, but if anything is wonky afterwards, I go ahead and nuke&pave. Reformat, reinstall from newest release, etc. If I'm to that point, I'd rather have windows installed with all the newest updates rather than install an older .iso and then immediately have it roll through a bunch of updates. I know that it will do some, but you can cut them down by getting newer install media.
