Made from a different mold |
Rifle is about 400 yards with sling, half that without. Recently played around at 700 on an 8" plate and scored plenty of hits out of a cheap 16" AR. 100 or so yards depending on the pistol and ammo. ___________________________ No thanks, I've already got a penguin.

I have steel set up at 100 and 200 out back. I regularly shoot the 100 yard stuff and then with a few tries I start hitting the 200 yard. I usually do it with a 1911 in 9 or 45 and my Glocks or FN 509 all 9mm. The 100 yard plates are 8" or 10" and the 200 yard is 18"X24" steel torso and a 24" X 24" plate.

I'm comfy at distance. Some past targets: 50 yards offhand one hand 92fs straight out of the box Winchester white box ammo. the 8 ring is 8" diameter, 10 ring is 3.3" Hammerli 208s also 50 yards offhand. I called the 9 at 4 0clock Then there is this at 50yards offhand SIGnature NRA Benefactor CMP Pistol Distinguished

And with rifle I have shot the Olympic rifle courses quite well. Now about the only offhand rifle is playing Service Rifle at 200 yards. And occasional longer with bolt rifles .243 to .338. And a couple times with 375HH. Ouch! 270Win is my favorite hunting rifle in 721 Rem or Model 70 SIGnature NRA Benefactor CMP Pistol Distinguished

If you want to shoot a rifle accurately, offhand is the worst position. I have been able to get at least "minute of man" accuracy shooting a rifle offhand at around 25 yards or less. But the way I see it, if you need to shoot at something farther away, you should have time to get into at least a kneeling or other more favorable position or stance, or even get behind some kind of cover and use that as a rest.

Conveniently located directly above the center of the Earth |
40 years ago I was running about the middle of the B, A & lower AA class, shooting IHMSA off hand at 200 yards with iron sighted Ruger Blackhawk 44 mag. Typical scores were above the 50 out of 80 targets. The AAA guys were considerably more accurate, usually adopting a non-standing position ("without artificial supports") to gain better accuracy. OK, so targets were 50/100/150/200 in chicken/pig/turkey/ram size. Still, bracing challenge. The very best in open competition would decide the winner on Copenhagen cans, which first were painted white, "turkey eggs" standing, then laying down if necessary. At 200 yards, still iron sights. Way out of my zone of accuracy for sure. I'm comfortable out to about 50 yards offhand these days if the target is big enough. **************~~~~~~~~~~ "I've been on this rock too long to bother with these liars any more." ~SIGforum advisor~ "When the pain of staying the same outweighs the pain of change, then change will come."~~sigmonkey

I shoot pistols at 50 feet--my eyes aren't good enough any more for more distance than that. I can keep my .50AE shots in a 3" circle at that distance, though. flashguy Texan by choice, not accident of birth

For pistol I've shot out to 100 yards with repeatable accuracy. I regularly shoot 200 yards standing with a rifle, and can usually keep them all in the 9 ring. I've been able to make 300 yard standing hits on an 'E' silloutre target just for shits and giggles, but I don't know if I'd call it repeatable. _____________________________ 'I'm pretty fly for a white guy'.

Spent a good deal of time hitting a gong at 100 yards with a 44 mag. took a while to dial it in, but then it wasn't a big deal Done it since several times with a 45acp and a 357. Probably rusty by now, but like riding a bicycle, you never forget.

Do you constitute sitting in a tree stand unsupported? Nothing fancy just the bench with the little bar that drops down. If so I am comfortable out to about 250 yards with my Sig SHR 970. Longest attempt was 227 yards and successful. ———————————————— The world's not perfect, but it's not that bad. If we got each other, and that's all we have. Experienced Slacker |
What I've always found is that I shoot at distance much better if it is anything but a paper target. Pistols or rifles never seemed to matter much. Some random tiny piece of whatever laying out inside of at least 100 yards would routinely be airborne in short order. Once in a while I would surprise myself on a regular target though. Like hitting well inside the 4" black spot with my .375 H&H from 100 yards three times in a row from standing. That was a long time ago, and I have all but given up shooting in the last few years so I'm sure things would be drastically different now.

my rifle club has a gong at 300, easy to hit offhand with the Garand once you get it dialed in, we hung a 8x11 plate at 200 one afternoon and was shooting it , from a rest, with 22's, the holdover was a bit much,, but once you figured it out, it was very repeatable https://chandlersfirearms.com/chesterfield-armament/
