I need to grab an extra chain or two for my Farmboss. One of you guys posted that you get yours from eBay. Non-OEM, but still a good price and mfg. Where were you sourcing them from? Thanks in advance.

I use Stihl MS440 professional use saws but use Oregon chains. I buy them by the case from Comstock Logging: http://www.shopcomstocklogging.com/

My local Stihl dealer carries Carlton chain (As well as Stihl). There are different types, from a homeowner "safety" chain to some more aggressive types. They have a relatively simple sharpening jig (one piece) and I can sharpen a 20" chain in 15 minutes.

I use one of the more aggressive types, might be a full chisel tooth, I can't remember.

How cheap can the non OEM be? I just replaced the chain on my Farmboss with a Stihl chain and it was around $20.

Could be he is a logger. Costs add up. More likely he is a frugal individual. That one link was pretty good, buy chains by the caseload. I hear the Mexican cartels use a lot of them.

I seem to remember them being about 1/2 the price of OEM, with OEM being around $40ish. This was a few years back, so maybe the price has dropped. I made a mental note at the time to double check the non-OEM price, but I can't remember the source SC said he used.

Not a logger, and my cartel days are behind me... Big Grin
I am planning on taking care of about 8 trees here in the next few weeks and need a couple extra chains...so yes, I'm being frugal.

Oregon, full chisel tooth.

Not supposed to be sold to non professionals, but it out preformed anything else we ever tried.

Disclaimer: It was several years back that I was in the wood cutting business so my experience is quite dated.

I'd use factory stihl. The Oregan chains I've used dulled very quickly (ones sold in Lowe's and have not great reviews there). There's another aftermarket brand that is better.....I think it's powerserve

I stock up at 'Baileysonline'. I doubt if it's more than $13 or so for a quality chain.

I go aftermarket, though I own two Stihl saws.

I use a lot of chain. I buy Oregon chain by the roll and loop. These guys are great and sell parts. Best pricing I've found. Highly recommend. Easy to talk to on the phone, they'll set you and your Farmboss up.

Frawley's Saw Shop

Square chisel full skip and semi skip chain, as mentioned, is great; very fast and can be very dangerous, it does not hold sharp in dirty wood, it is VERY difficult to square grind, it is fine to sharpen round file, most guys just run a loop to dull then toss. I do not recommend if you have little or intermittent experience with a saw.

Round ground in full or semi skip can also bite to non regular user.

Oregon is OEM on my cheap little Craftsman and that's what I use as replacement. $20.

Thanks for the info everyone. I'm going to look over a few of those online vendors mentioned and go from there. Appreciate it.

I use Oregon only now.
After trying other chains, nothing performs like the Oregon.
Even their after market bars are equal if not better than the Stihl OEM.

I use 25 inch bars and I recently had to buy a chain at the Stihl dealer. It cost me $46 plus tax. The Oregon chains from Comstock Logging cost me $15 and they are just as good as OEM.

To the OP: What size chain do you use? I was sent a few chains that are the wrong size and the company told me to keep them and they sent me replacements. You are welcome to them if they fit.

Cutters Choice has good chains at a lower price. Their Lazer semi-chisel chain is safe and easy to sharpen and is probably made by Oregon. Also their other parts are a bargain with free chain when buying a bar.

Right now, 18". Been considering moving to a 20" bar though.

My local dealer is competitive with the online prices so maybe check yours too.
You pay sales tax that way but no shipping.
