Two people have mentioned to me , in the last two weeks,

It seems that Mexican Cartels are paying pretty good money to mules for buying ammo in the U.S. and hauling it to Mexico.

So I googled it ,
found a few thing but not "substantial "

have you seen? heard about this?

Ammo? What ammo?
There’s none to be bought anywhere around here, 100 miles from the border.

There’s no ammo to speak of in central Texas...dunno how far they may range, but I’d gather that there’s no ammo anywhere.

Do you think the cartels can’t import ammo directly from China or Russia? They can most assuredly afford to. Or steal/divert it from the Mexican Army or police? That whole country is so rife with corruption I don’t see much that would stop any of that from happening.

I’m pretty sure whoever cooked up this news story has some proposal for restricting ammo sales to US citizens, to address this supposed problem.

It happens, sure. Wife and I watched a bunch of Borderforce USA on Natgeo, they mentioned it being an issue but obviously cars going to Mexico get much less scrutiny than those coming in. I remember they did nab someone with a trunk load of 7.62x39 and 5.56 heading down.

But one thing we learned during the Obummer years was the cartels get most of their gear from the Mexican military or they smuggle it in from central and South America. As much as they tried to play it up we know only a small percentage of cartel weapons come from the US.

There's nothing going on in the McAllen area, at least, that compares to the rolling ammo mulefest that was El Paso in the days of the Mexican revolutions of the early 20th Century. But for years it was common to be strolling through the old downtown part of the city and see uniformed Mexican officers (military or police) strolling into guns stores there and arranging to buy cases of ammo. Then they supposedly changed the law to prevent that. At least as recently as fifteen years ago there was still no prohibition on selling them reloading supplies, but it was a hush-hush thing. Don't know what's happening now, and never did get definitive word on where the ammo went.

As for the cartels, yeah, if they're importing fully automatic weapons through the Port of Los Angeles before hopping over the border with them then there's no reason they wouldn't be doing the same with at least Russian ammo.
