AOC calls for release of all Rikers inmates amid ‘inhumane’ jail conditions

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and three other House Democrats from New York called on Mayor de Blasio and Gov. Hochul Tuesday to release all inmates held on Rikers Island, citing a long-running pattern of “human right violations” at the jail.

Ocasio-Cortez made the extraordinary demand in a letter to de Blasio and Hochul issued jointly with Reps. Jamaal Bowman, Nydia Velazquez and Jerrold Nadler, who chairs the powerful House Judiciary Committee.

In addition to freeing the roughly 6,000 inmates on the island, the four lawmakers wrote that the jail itself should be “immediately” shuttered and federal funding for its operations seized.

“The current conditions experienced at Rikers are inhumane, unconstitutional and a public health crisis,” they wrote. “We believe federal funds should be used to decarcerate and shut down the facility immediately, as well as provide social, economic, psychological and physical health support to all those that are released to ensure their safe reentry into our community.”

Neither the mayor nor the governor have entertained the idea of freeing all Rikers inmates as they scramble to address the spiraling crisis at the overcrowded jail.

Rather, de Blasio and Hochul have pushed for releasing a subset of inmates locked up for technical parole violations. Hochul signed a bill into law last week that would make it so minor parole violations are no longer punishable by jail, but most components of that measure won’t take effect until 2022.

Inhumane is committing criminal acts on other law abiding people, usually a number of times to get you into a real prison.

Build a wall around NYC and release them all.

Yeah, I'm fine with NYC releasing its criminals so long as they keep them to themselves.

Or, perhaps, slip them a few at a time onto that fleet of planes repatriating the "Haitian migrants."

Fortunately, AOC has no authority to order any such thing, only a big mouth and an orbiting group of brainless reporters.

Why do Congressional Reps believe they have any authority in a local or state matter? This Fed govt is way over the limits.

Let me tell you how the Covid prisoner release has been going: Visiting AZ for six weeks this spring / summer, I repeatedly encountered the most despicable meth heads all over downtown areas. Where no panhandling was previously tolerated, you're openly and closely accosted with overtones of physical threats. With rotten teeth and open sores they closely approach you at gas stations, convenience stores, as you commute to and from errands, hikes, pleasure walk. The police are stymied; the meth heads pop up like wack-a-moles, with prison barely a threat.

That is just the CA NV AZ druggies getting out early. Like KZH says, "Build a wall around NYC and release them all."

I agree with releasing all of them but release them into the areas that voted for those pieces of shit. And just don’t release them, make sure they have housing in those areas so they stay for a very long time.

Elections have consequences. You asked for it, you got it now eat the shit you asked for.

I'm OK with it as long as there is a slight modification. Let's call it the Community Correctional Center (aka half-way house) plan. AOC and each of the 3 NY congressional critters turn their residence into a CCC and each get 1500. No vacations/trips until they've successfully rehabilitated all 1500 assigned to their CCC.

Been happening here. News does a good job keeping it low key, not linking it to similar crimes caused by questionable releases.

Read this gobbledygook and realize this is what these voters voted for.

Let the Rikers victims out and let chaos reign. Again, this is what voting WOKE is all about. They should get exactly what they want and get it good and hard.

Luckily AOC has no direct power in this matter, and even DeBlasio can't be politically stupid enough to release 6000 inmates in NYC.

I hope NY officials tell the interfering feds to pound sand.

Some time ago the scuttlebutt on the internet was that AOC was looking at challenging Chuckles Schumer for his US Senate seat in the Dem primary. This sort of thing is a cheap way to get attention. It may also be a way for AOC to, ah, 'pivot' to running for Governor. Either way, it makes her sound progressive and she won't actually have to solve the problem herself.

Overcrowding problem?

Natural solution: release everyone in the jail, without any recourse to what crime they actually are accused of.
