There was a cop show some time back. Late model cars with a kill switch were parked in areas plagued by car theft. There was also a hidden camera in the car that could record facial expressions. You would see kids jump in the car for a joy ride with a gigantic grin on their face. The cops who were in an unmarked car would then activate the kill switch and it would automatically lock the doors and windows. It was cheap entertainment but it decreased car thefts. The excuses the kids offered were hilarious. "Bro I was just moving the car to a safer place etc"

Is this in the bill that has already passed and been signed, or the even bigger bill that is currently hung up?

So I imagine that us Jeep owners that take our daily drivers off roading are going to have an added surprise when fording a stream, a mud bog or better yet ascending or descending a hill.

Wonder how long I can keep my 2012 on the road for?

"shovelhead" - theoretically you can keep it on the road until your own personal time has expired. I'm guessing from the moniker "shovelhead" that you are possibly (or probably) a motorcyclist; and IF you are then I am guessing further that you already have a wealth of mechanical experience/knowledge/ability.... so keeping a vehicle running should be no trick for you AT ALL.... The car manufacturers may very well drag their feet on this issue. At one point there was a push by law enforcement to get car makers to install anti pursuit technology that would enable cops to remotely shut down a car that attempts to flee from them.
And it never came to pass. And implementing that tech might well have saved some lives.
IIRC, the car makers made all kinds of excuses to not implement it with the main one being car buyers would not pay the added cost of the equipment. And given the state of vehicle tech now, it would be much easier to install anti pursuit gear than it was even 10 years ago.

I wouldn’t buy a car if I knew it had such a device.

Big problem up here is rust. When I see those window stickers "Salt Life" those are fitting up here. Between road salt in the winter and calcium chloride on dirt roads here our vehicles don't have a chance. My '12 Wrangler has a place the paint has cracked in the back, going in for paint work in the spring.

I'll tackle just about anything but the late model stuff I'm so out of the loop I just pay to have it done. Have two other cars, a 67 Pontiac that is finished and a 55 Buick that I need to get back into someday. But I'm planning to retire again next summer so that will give me more time to play.

And yes. Still on two wheels, been on them since 1967. On my third Harley, first was a 76 XLCH Sportster, second 82 FLH, third 2002 FLHTPI (injected police model) still have numbers two and three. Need to get a bike back from California. Friend gave me a 65 Suzuki Hillbilly, a restoration project plus something for the grandsons to learn to ride on too.

At one time, there was a Constitution that had that such a proviso.

What happens when the kill switch is activated on a car traveling 70mph on a crowded expressway? The consequences boggle the mind. A cop might use judgment and not do it, but a hacker might not.

Somewhere the "Moms Demand" group is thinking this kill switch technology could go on handguns... it's just a matter of time until they propose such nonsense.......after all in my state I've already got to put my handgun in a safe 24/7 when it's not in use.

Did we forget when Jeep already had a hacker situation where they were able to override brakes and steering.

My stepfather's 2021 corvette had some driver monitoring device built in which was "allowed to be relayed to his insurance company".

He did not find this out until a week or so after he picked it up. He was needless to say PO'd and call them right away to have it deactivated. That is some shady shit.

If it won't matter in 5 years don't give it more than 5 minutes.

Wait until they turn off all cars inside a metro area for Covid or some other made up excuse. Roads will be blocked as newer cars sit.

2003 2500HD diesel with 180K on the clock.

I expect both to be going longer than I, provided they don't disintegrate from rust.
