No not illegal to own or to shoot just illegal to carry if you have a conceal carry permit.

Laws only apply to the little people. In NJ Hollow points are illegal if carried in public. They are legal to purchase, legal to use at the range, legal to keep loaded in your home or place of work, but the sticky point is getting it from Point A to Point B. That always opens you up to potential charge by an overzealous officfer if stopped.

All the police departments in Nj carry HP's on duty as far as I am aware. Our department used Federal 45ACP 230 grain Hydroshocks.

Has there been a clear court ruling/AG opinion/etc. in NJ on expanding bullets without a hollow point?

For example, Federal Guard Dog EFMJ. That one seems pretty straightforward, in that it doesn't have a cavity at all.

But what about the various Hornady Critical Duty/Defense loads, which are basically traditional JHPs with the cavity filled by a plug?

So why don't the LEO's there carry ball ammo? Obviously hollow points are not humane, thus the reason you cannot carry them in your pistol outside the confines of your home or the range. Big Grin

They sell special ammo for state that forbid hollow points in Concealed Carry. Cor Bon makes a round which is a hollow point with a polymer ball in the hole, Federal makes a copper coated round which is the same but coated. I checked with the head of ballistics in N. J. and he stated "these are legal" Why I asked this question ,We went for a transport who was held in Jersey and was asked if we had hollow points in our weapon. , they gave us a bad look as reminded that they were not allowed.

Are you saying the law there forbids LEOs from carrying hollow points, too? Do they not give courtesy to LEOs from other States?

I would certainly NOT count on THAT.

NJ is insanely anti gun. It has been a deep rooted belief in NJ Law Enforcement for probably 40 to 50 years now.

I know of an instance where a teen was stopped in a DWI checkpoint. She had a .44 mag dummy rd on her key ring. A .44 mag case, NO primer, NO powder, with a 1/8" hole in the case to accommodate the key ring. BUT it had some sort of jacketed hollow point bullet seated.

She was held at the checkpoint, her car and it's occupants were searched. She was eventually released about an hour later.

Correct. The bullet (actually, the statute reads "hollow nose or dum-dum bullet") is the horribly dangerous, insanely controlled part. Technically, a box of fifty hollowpoint bullets for reloading, absent any powder, primer, or case = fifty fourth-degree crimes. Limited exceptions for possession in your home, in your business, or en route from place of purchase to home or business.

Yeah. No proof of unlawful intent is required. Simple possession.

Same category as vicious killing machines like slingshots (4th degree crime) or airsoft guns (3rd degree crime, a felony.)

This just in: New Jersey sucks.

Although I agree with the sentiment and Jersey does suck in more ways than you can imagine, you are incorrect as far as simple possession. One is allowed (!) to purchase, transport, fire said bullets in the approved manner of target shooting at a range or hunting. And no, CC carry folks (mostly retired PD) CANNOT carry HP.

Now that you mention that I am reminded of a story I heard from a friend of ours who was an officer with the NJSP. Evidently one of the young bucks decided to put a VA State Trooper through the ringer during a traffic stop while he was in NJ on official business. I do not remember the specifics, but I do remember our friend telling us the rest of the guys who were good guys were aggravated because the poor treatment was reciprocated for a number of years anytime a member of the NJSP was stopped in VA.

In general the NJSP were a great bunch of people, at least the ones we knew, and we knew most of the people who worked in Troop A.

I know there's occasional friction and lack of courtesy between them and members of the NYPD, but that's probably tit for tat bullshit.

The best stories I heard, but have no idea if they are true, were stories where a guy from a local department in Southern NJ bragged about going over to Philadelphia and taking down stop signs and traffic lights. He said the Philadelphia PD did the same in whatever town in NJ.

Personally, I thought that was a bit much when I heard it. IF that happened, and I seriously doubt it, it could never happen with all the cameras today. I thought it a bit odd someone would find that funny, but when LEOs feel comfortable with people sometimes stories are told.

That, and $10 will buy me a sandwich.

True.

The one loose round that fell out of your range bag and rolled under the seat? Still a crime. Frown

Every aspect starts with a presumption of illegality, then carves out limited exceptions (with the burden for establishing them naturally falling back in the subj... Er, citizen.)

If ever there was a state which deserves to be under the yoke of a distant monarch, it is present-day New Jersey. I rue the day we moved here, and count the days 'til escape.
