The "grilling" done on them in Germany is more like a pan fry or griddling, which the OP can certainly do.

Leberkäse is one of my favorite German foods.

I'll be right over. Cool

I think this is what I'll end up doing, once I can get Miss Picky to agree on the side-dishes.

We have plenty of cast iron, and if I can figure time and temps, maybe I'll oven-bake them in the cast iron. We have enough for a couple meals, so we can try both ways.

No grilling? Perish the thought!

Oh, and if you're going to put them on a bun, the bun better be just long enough to wrap your mitt around so you don't burn the bajeesus out of your hand.

I first saw the big grates like this at the wine festival in Bernkastel-Kues. I don't remember much from that day except it was fun and the German polizei are pretty polite when asking you and your drunk co-workers to please find another route to walk besides the parade route. Big Grin

Grrr, can't get Imgur to play nice with the forum...

We usually boil them in beer and then throw them on the grill.
Put on bun and add sauerkraut.

Take an apple and dice it. Put it in a pan with Apple cider vinegar and a hand full of brown sugar. "Fry" the Apple in the mix and serve with your bratwurst.

It is. This thread had me try it tonight. I grilled up some brats last night and had leftovers. I diced the apples pretty thick and used it like a relish on the bun. No other condiments needed.

History of currywurst

I had my first Currywurst in the Rathskeller of the Zellendorfer Rathaus, IIRC, early in 1966.
Definitely one of the most enjoyable German foods—-well below beer, of course, but still enjoyable.

I like it a lot. The thing is that you can eat quite a bit of it before it fills you up, compared to typical barbecue meats. As mentioned, it is typically served with fried eggs on top, with the yolk usually runny to drench the meat when picked. The traditional side is warm potato salad, though fried potatoes and other salads are also possible; and you can also eat it warm or cold on bread or rolls, either as one thick slice or in thinner cuts. At restaurants it's often served as part of a barbecue plate with various sausages and steaklets.
