As the title says, I need ideas for a bratwurst dinner. We got some decent-sized brats today, and I want to make something traditional.

I thought typically you'd just fry them up and serve with sauerkraut, but the only things I find on-line are somewhat complicated recipes for the bratwurst, nothing for sides.

Ideen?

Many Volkers in my family tree, but they're all dead or I'd ask them.

Ironically, the first person to emigrate to the US with my name arrived here from Ireland about 1845. History is unclear if a mule kicked him to death, or he was hanged for stealing it.

Sauerkraut for the side. Put the bratwurst in some brotchen and add a little mustard. I like a little bratwurst also cut up and put in the sauerkraut. If you can't find brotchen, Publix has Chicago rolls, which are somewhat similar.

Also good is add a German salad of cucumber and carrots shreaded, and marinated in a mix of olive oil, red wine vinegar, with a touch of salt and some sugar.

Cut yellow potatoes in large chunks (like 8ths), cut sweet onion in large chunks (like 8ths) put in stock pot with saurkraut and simmer with diced garlic, a touch of basil, bayleaf and cloves until the potatoes are cooked.

Grill the sausage and serve with coarse German mustard.

I like mine with sauerkraut, or red cabbage. Either, but not both.

German potato salad is always good for a side.
Here's a recipe I tried...pretty good too
German potato salad

Never made spaetzle, but I eat the heck out of it whenever it's on the menu.

And yes, a few several Franziskaner Hefeweiss would help Smile

Simple. So far the best option. I can buy the German potato salad at Hy Vee. My Polish-ancestry girlfriend doesn't like sauerkraut, but maybe I can convince her.

Brats belong on a bun IMO. Boil them in beer until almost done then put them on the grill to give them that "snap". Serve on a bun with mustard (and ketchup for us heathens). Side of macaroni or potato salad. Perhaps some corn on the cob. Any beer not used for boiling should be consumed at that point.

the baking seems to mellow out the 'kraut, so perhaps it might be a bit more palatable for her ?

if you can get some purple cabbage slaw, when you get the potato salat, that might be a good backup...

my dad made awesome spaetzen (spaetzle) that he learnt from his aunt Smile

This. I usually pull some thyme and marjoram out of the garden and add it to the beer for the boiling step.

I love German Red cabbage and German potato salad. Great with good sausages.

I prefer to reserve sauerkraut to have with shredded pulled pork from a Boston Butt.
