Rent a car in Christchurch and see the South Island--I promise you will not regret it. We did it in 2019, and it was wonderful.
We had a NZ travel agency arrange for places to go and lodging, as well as the car rental; it all went very well; we could choose what we wanted to see and do. I wanted to have a glider ride out of Omarama, a world-class soaring site. The pilot took me OVER the top of Mount Cooke at 16,000 feet altitude--unforgettable.

The travel agency was called First Light. It saved us so much trouble and made it easy. Hardest part was driving on the left, didn't try to do that in a big city.

The South Island is absolutely stunning. I've been fortunate to have done two trips for MC trips.
Tour operator was able to hook me up with some "farm stays" which were very interesting. Well worth doing if you can arrange it.

Both are on out hope-to list.

Is this for work or fun? That seems like a short stay for an incredibly long trip. We're trying to figure out a way to combine the two, or at least have longer at one or the other.

I'm gonna be an ass and say extend your trip if you can. With flight time doesn't sound long enough to me.

Yeah this was it for the deal. a week isn't bad. I'll stay the 1st day and part of the 2nd in AKL. Then run to CHC for a car and figure it out then back to AKL and the next day travel back the USA
