So... Mrs.BurtonRW and I decided to take a road trip to Indianapolis over the holiday weekend. (We had an actual reason - we "collect" zoos and a good friend of ours, who happens to be a sculptor, did a huge orangutan for the Indianapolis Zoo a number of years back, which we have always wanted to see.)

Anyway... I assumed that Indy would be just another big city - most of which I wouldn't want to be in for all sorts of reasons, including safety and sanitation.

We were surprised. Got in around mid-day on Saturday and noticed right away that there was virtually nobody there. On the one hand, it seemed like a dead or dying city. On the other, we were observing modern buildings, tons of infrastructure, and a clearly thriving arts/restaurant scene. But no traffic and no people. It was bizarre. The city was also unusually (I thought) clean, except for the homeless population, which was spread out about one to every couple of blocks. Nothing like we have in Baltimore or D.C. or what I've seen in Philly, Seattle, or L.A., so it really wasn't much to notice.

We stayed at the Fairfield Inn & Suites which is immediately next to a proper Marriott and a Courtyard, all built over the same shared garage. Kind of weird, but okay. Had a really nice view of White River Park and the system of skywalks connecting the downtown hotels to the convention center, to the Circle Center Mall was impressive.

It was labor day weekend, so there was a labor (union) street festival going on at Monument Circle. A few cool shops there, and they clearly know how to put on a street festival. And every night, there's a patriotic light show emblazoned on the surrounding buildings. We went out Sunday evening to see it. Would have been impressive if it hadn't been preempted by a union propaganda show for the weekend.

Funny thing, however... after dark, the city seems to turn into a drunk party scene. Lots of loud and rowdy types. Didn't feel unsafe, but I couldn't figure out where they were hiding during the day. And traffic laws become more... suggestions, it seemed. Almost saw pedestrians nailed by reckless drivers turning across crosswalks on more than one occasion.

I did note that outside of the downtown area were the places I was glad I didn't have to go, but I'm not used to seeing such a stark contrast between downtown (good) and the outskirts (bad).

It was interesting, so I thought I'd share. I'd be interested in any thoughts on my observations from locals.

I predict that there will be many suggestions and statements about the law made here, and some of them will be spectacularly wrong. - jhe888

Since you are so close you need to experience the Indy 500. Nothing like it in the world. Indy has come a long way since they stole the Colts from Baltimore. Top notch medical care, particularly orthopedics. Home of the dental school for IU.

Indy is a great town. Nicer areas are north of downtown like Carmel etc. I’m not a big city guy at all but I enjoyed my time in Indy.

Indianoplace is a dangerous shithole. There are some nice suburbs and downtown during daytime isn't bad but it's a liberal managed crime wave. First impressions are deceiving.

FTA:

Indianapolis’ murder numbers higher than Chicago

For the first time in history, Indianapolis appears to have surpassed Chicago as the most violent city in the Midwest.

As of last weekend, 160 people have been murdered in Indianapolis this year, compared to 445 murders in Chicago through July 31.

The comparison between the two cities was made last week by the head of the police union that represents central Indiana, Rick Snyder, president of the Fraternal Order of Police.

“Chicago is about 3.09 times larger than Indianapolis, by population. So, if you make that adjustment, per capita, we’re outpacing Chicago in number of homicides per capita by nearly 4%,” Snyder told Indianapolis television station WISH-TV.

Criminal homicides are up 34% over 2020, when comparing the first six months of this year to the first six months of last year. And the general trendline has been up for Indianapolis since 2012.

In a news conference, Indianapolis Mayor Joe Hogsett called Indianapolis an “extraordinarily safe city” and labeled the problem one of “gun violence.” ...

Watched a show last night on the Burger Chef murder's in Speedway in the late seventies. Did not instill confidence in the police. It was pretty obvious who killed the four young kids and an additional young girl. And it's still unsolved Roll Eyes

^^^ THIS ^^^

When I was a Purdue (halfway between Indy and Shitcago) student in the mid-90s, Indy's downtown was new and vibrant. Felt safe even at night so we preferred to go there over Shitcago. There were crime ridden neighborhoods not very far away, but the elected officials seemed protective of their revitalized, modern downtown.

10 years later, one of my Purdue buddies gets married in downtown Indy. I looked forward to go out downtown again, but the enthusiasm changed once I saw the decline. I had lived in the Los Angeles metropolitan area and Dallas metropolitan area since graduating, and would put Indy closer to LA than Dallas (not a compliment) in terms of festering problems downtown caused by libtarded policies.

I set up at the Indy 1500 gun show, correction, I used to set up at Indy 1500. The fairgrounds are in the ghetto and the facility is crumbling and obsolete.

Those that frequent Kentucky gun shows know Whitey and Mike - world class gun traders and all around good guys. Whitey was buying big at Indy 1500, parked in secure fenced in parking with an attendant in a ticket booth nearby. Whitey was hauling his purchases to his truck and locking them. Came out to find his window shattered and his guns gone. Put the puzzle together and see if you don't come up with the theft being an inside job.

I like the Indy downtown area - during the day. It can either be dead like the OP experienced of overflowing with people during a large convention or athletic tournament. Both are fun.

My normal routine in Indy is to go to lunch late, have a few beers, roll to an Irish pub until Nicky Blaines opens up. Then have a stogie and walk back to the hotel by 7 or 7:30. This avoids all the nonsense that happens late at night in downtown Indy. They are talking of turning the Circle Center mall into condos since malls are pretty much dead these days.
