Never been to the Outer Banks, but tomorrow my wife is taking me for the week to celebrate my 60th.

Have a really nice place on the beach, but no other plans yet, what does the Forum say?

Hopefully the weather is in your favor. 2 places to see there: Bodie Island Light Station & Jockey's Ridge State Park both come to mind about Nags head. 10 mins up US158 is Kill Devil Hills & the birth of flight & Wright Bros museum. Well worth the trip since your that close. Welcome to Carolina Wink

Depending on the car you are driving, if you drive the opposite direction there is an offroad beach that has wild horses and some really cool driving.. and you ALWAYS see a few idiots in over their heads.

also, we enjoy eating at Goombays in Nags head, which is around 10 minutes from KDH. John's is also a spot we go to every year. It's all outdoor seating with great food and shakes, they've been there as long as we have been going down (over 30 years)

We were there early April and I had a blast. I don't know what you like to do (I'm a few years older than you). You're already there so too late to suggest taking your bicycle but you can rent them lots of places and riding there is easy since it's flat. Every morning I took my coffee out on the deck to watch the sun come up then went on a bicycle ride before making breakfast.
Two places I enjoyed hiking were Nags Head Woods Ecological Preserve and Jockey's Ridge State Park. Also rent a kayak and paddle around over on the sound side.

Oh and happy birthday! Big Grin

No car is as much fun to drive, as any motorcycle is to ride.

Check out Duck Doughnuts and get a dozen. They are INCREDIBLE! Be prepared to wait in a long line.

Thanks for all the good info guys!! I'm hoping the weather is cooperative, but we will make the best of whatever we get.

A favorite spot for my family, vacationing there every year for decades, sometimes multiple times a year. Problem with areas like this is things come and go pretty quickly, many can't survive the off season. A good restaurant one year is gone or pretty crappy the next. That said, Blue Point in Duck is a pretty special spot with great food and a view over the sound at sunset. Can be hard to get a decent table so make reservations and arrive early to spend time with a drink in the adirondack chairs overlooking the sound. Nice bike trails in Duck as well. Rent a bike and go for a cruise before or after dinner.

Surfcasting can be enjoyable most anywhere, when it's good, it's good, and when it isn't it isn't, but the right bait and the right rig will help a lot, so get good advice from a local tackle shop. Or for more serious fishing, Pirate's Cove will offer multiple charter option out of Oregon inlet. A drive north onto the beach to Corova Beach is fun with 4WD as mentioned. Wright Brothers memorial is worth a visit, and I HIGHLY recommend you read or listen to David McCullough's The Wright Brothers before you go if possible. One of the best biographies Ive read or heard in decades and beautifully narrated. Folks seem to like Kill Devil's Soft Serve Custard on the bypass. I like to play golf, so I'll hit Currituck Club, Kilmarlich, or Duck Woods, but they ain't cheap. Manteo can be a nice place to visit, still have a brew pub there. Crabbing with chicken necks in the sound near Collington Harbor can be fun and surprisingly productive if crabs are out. Also Weeping Raddish Farm Brewery in Grandy on your way in or out for a farm-to-table pub dining experience.
