Lake County Florida Barricaded Standoff - Officer Involved Shooting - Update - Homeowner Killed
This is happening across the street from my house.

Sheriff's announcement: https://www.lcso.org/mediaRele..._template.php?id=658

What I have observed:

* 30 to 40 vehicles, including 3 tactical vehicles staged in the field next door.

* Drone and helicopter working scene.

* Deployment of sniper team with suppressed long gun.

* Load up of tactical team into two armored vehicles.

* 4 reports of what were probably either flashbangs or breaching charges.

* Did not hear any gunfire.

* Return of tactical vehicles.

* Arrival and departure of medevac chopper - empty.

* Arrival of fire suppression equipment.

* Departure of one ambulance

* Departure of a number of unmarked vehicles.

What I have heard from third parties:

* Wellness check gone bad.

* Individual barricaded.

* House breached.

* Individual killed. - Per Sheriff's update; person transported to hospital. Update Declared dead at hospital.

What is rumored:

* Significant quantity of explosives on site.

I will update as I learn more.

Was kind of a wild morning. Secured the house, secured the horses, checked in with a deputy on scene and offered my field for additional staging or a helicopter landing area, and got behind cover until it appeared to be over and we got the "individual killed" call.

Was this a neighbor that you were acquainted with?

Glad you/yours and law enforcement weren't injured.

No, parcels out here are a minimum of 5 acres, and the relevant house was on the other side of the main road, about 4 or 5 parcels removed from us. Most folks out here are friendly, but generally keep to themselves.

I understand from a neighbor that the individual had lived there for +/- 20 years and "was a nice a guy as you'd ever meet."

Bad situation for all, if the death is true.

Feel for whomever initiated the check, if it's a family member, and it ended in this standoff and possible death of the person they are checking on...

He was the only person in the house or on the property. How the hell is he dead due to a wellness check?

I'm pretty conflicted about this. I like and respect our sheriff, and I know and respect a bunch of his deputies. I'm always bothered when a single armed person ends up dead from LE when on their own property. How the fuck does that happen.

It seems to me that once the deputies make contact and determine the homeowner is alive, they should leave, even if he's armed and unhappy. Just leave. Release the pressure, and let time take its course. Not draw a perimeter, build an assault, and go in. How does this protect the public? He has no record of threatening his neighbors, and everyone I have met who knew him, liked him.

Red Flag Law?? This is EXACTLY how I imagine many of those situations going down...

Any more news on this? My folks have a neighbor down there that’s an elderly retired LEO. He lives on his own and is a bit of a different duck. I’d hate to think of something like this happening to him due to a wellness check.

Media is reporting that he pointed a gun at deputies. If true, AMF. Also if true, he didn’t die as a result of a wellness check no more than George Floyd died as a result of jaywalking.

Wonder whether there is video from body cameras or dash cameras to verify this.

That depends a LOT on the context. If someone breaks down my door they're going to get a gun pointed at them...I don't care who they are. Dead over a welfare check? I'd like to see what really happened and the local residents should be demanding it.

It seems a lot of law enforcement agencies have forgotten that age old practice of simply knocking on the fucking door.

Geez, a lot of people showing their true colors by filling in the blanks as they want them to be. Unless this is some made for Hollywood conspiracy plot, the cops went to this house because someone else called them and said something isn’t right with the homeowner. Strike 1. The cops go and sniff around and say yep, where there is smoke there is fire, we’re going to hang around a bit and bring in some reinforcements. Strike 2. The guy doesn’t comply with the cops orders and effectively validates the concern of the initial caller and the cops. Strike 3.

Talk about “filling in blanks”… Roll Eyes

Could just as easily be 1. Guy in his own house minding his own business 2. No one at risk of any harm until cops show up and aggravate the situation 3. Cops push a bad position due to no “respect my authority!” 4. Instead of de-escalating, cops just ramp it up and force a bad situation to a bad conclusion.

While not a cop, I ran the dispatch center for 25 years. In that role I was involved in LOTS of tactical responses, hostage situations, standoffs, etc over the years. Part of my job was the radio traffic, calling out specialty units to respond (SWT, HNT, Air Support, mutual response requests, etc).

Regarding the OP about the response and build up the first question I had is WHY? Nothing released after this point that would suggest the need for such a response. One guy on HIS property, no mention at this point about three ways, hostages, taking pot shots, or anything.

Seems like there is a LOT of info missing..

What part of "...Shall not be infringed" don't you understand???

It seems like there isn’t much information. It could be that the LEOs could/should have handled things differently. It could also be that the homeowner deliberately committed suicide by cop. In the absence of more information it seems premature to speculate one way or another. This is not an emergency that requires any of us to form an opinion based on the available information and a whole lot of Ass-u-me-ing.

I was all wrong about this. I had interpreted "welfare check" to be a visit to determine if the occupant were still alive and well. I guess being 85 might bias me toward that position.

The line preceding the one that you quoted changes the context significantly.

Also note, this area has quite a few horse farms / ranches. OP's property, in the immediate vicinity, has somewhere around 25 or 30 acres. Depending on the type of the rumored explosives, there could be any number of legitimate reasons to have them.

They did a wellness check on me Nov 13 and broke down two doors causing $4K damage. Fairfax County has refused to pay for the damage.

They could have gone through a ground floor window and caused $200 damage.
