Never heard anyone refer to a woobie, only "poncho liner". Same as with this "beanie", I never heard anyone call it that, just a "knit cap" or "cap".

We (mech inf, USAEUR) used the term "woobie" back in late 80s/early 90s...interchangeably with "poncho liner".

I’m not 100% sure, but I believe the term “Woobie” came around mid 1980’s

Unless our Vietnam Veterans can confirm or deny.

Poncho liners were first used by the U.S. military in the Vietnam War. They gained the nickname "woobie" later; that term is conjectured to have derived from the name for a child's security blanket in the 1983 movie Mr. Mom.[

I retired in 1985, never heard the term until much later
