Civil War buffs probably recognize that phrase as the last words uttered by Stonewall Jackson. They came to mind when my wife shared some pics with me from the weekend. She and my daughter went to work some horses at a farm located on the Clinch River. After working them they decided to hack out on some of the beautiful trails and ended up down by the river.

Beautiful pictures.

I used to do a lot of riding in Harrison County Ohio. Your photos really remind me of that time.

Scenes like that make it impossible for me to understand people that prefer urban life. Even a loud river, chirping bugs and loud wildlife are peaceful and serene compared to the cacophony of cities.

That second photo is a thing of beauty! Worth framing.

Bama, many thanks to you and coffeeaddict for a restful mid-week MoZ. Boy I needed that today!

By the way, your quote reminds me of when my wife and I visited the grave of Jackson’s left arm.

Great photos all, but I agree that the second one is perfection. I hope that Thomas Jackson crossed over with an image like that in his mind.

I am pretty sure that , thats what Baider said to Myra, on their third date.

Except there were no horses involved.

you see, Myra accused Baider of steering her to the hole on the bottom of the Wapsi river , in order to get her soaking wet.

Well
Baider pulled Myra out in good time, but he had to hold the pic nik blanket up while myra got out of her soaked cloths.

it took three hours of hanging them up , for them to dry.

Myra didn't know weather to go out with him again or not , but she did and they have been married for 33 years.

Looks like a beautiful place, I hope ol’ Stonewall passed comfortably.

Never heard the phrase “hack out” before.

Why, would somebody steal a saddle horn though? Wink

Thanks guys...Leemur, I agree and am thankful every day that we are able to live far away from urban life.

That second picture is my favorite as well - it evokes a sense that the end of summer is near. I don't know if it's the filtered sunlight or just the scene, but it just looks like Fall is on the horizon.

sjtill - cool story on the grave for Stonewall's arm. I did not know that it was buried separately.

TMats - I wonder if 'hack out' is just an English riding phrase. It's used all the time by English riders when they trail ride or just go out into the fields to do jumps...And yeah, somebody must have sneaked into the tack room and swiped all the saddle horns!! Smile

That looks so relaxing and peaceful.

"It did not really matter what we expected from life, but rather what life expected from us. We needed to stop asking about the meaning of life, and instead to think of ourselves as those who were being questioned by life – daily and hourly. Our answer must consist not in talk and meditation, but in right action and in right conduct. Life ultimately means taking the responsibility to find the right answer to its problems and to fulfill the tasks which it constantly sets for each individual." Very pretty river.

I think life is pretty good if you are in the mountains next to a river!

Unfortunately, I don't think that was the case, considering he was delirious with fever and racked with advanced pneumonia, with a recently amputated left arm and another recent gunshot wound to the right arm.

Beautiful area.

Clinch Mountain is named after the Clinch River, which was named by 18th-century explorers.

The Stanley Brothers were an American bluegrass duo of singer-songwriters and musicians made up of brothers Carter Stanley (1925–1966) and Ralph Stanley (1927–2016). Ralph and Carter performed as The Stanley Brothers with their band, The Clinch Mountain Boys, from 1946 to 1966. Ralph kept the band name when he continued as a solo artist after Carter's death, from 1967 until his own death in 2016.

Clinch Mountain Backstep is a banjo tune written by Ralph and released by the Stanley Brothers in 1958. Most bluegrass musicians do not cover the song )claiming it is too close to Old Joe Clark). Only the dedicated few, preserving the music (I play it on mandolin; it takes on a whole new set of overtones if you play it on the mando in "B", which any self-respecting guitar player will refuse to do.)

I read the title and heard Shelby Foote's voice in my head before even opening this topic & the pictures fit perfectly.
