A great bartender skill would be for them to properly make me a traditional drink. They can put fruit, vegetables, herbs into a glass, but they are clueless when I ask for a martini, a manhattan, or a sidecar. Once, at a trendy bar in L.A., I asked for a martini. The guy pulls out a bottle of Grey Goose from the freezer, pours it into a martini glass and plops an olive into it. I pushed it away and left. Well, except for the crappy vodka he used, if he had waved a bottle of vermouth over it, you would have had a well made vodka martini. Unless you wanted gin.

A martini is gin and vermouth . The guy in L.A. served me cold vodka. And vermouth makes it a martini. Otherwise it is cold gin. Imagine ordering a margarita and instead of tequila, it is vodka. From the 100,000 foot view I have it seems like he's served a drink or two. I could be wrong but I don't think so

A martini can have either gin or vodka, depending on your taste. The mere presence of a bottle of vermouth in the general vicinity is what makes it a martini. More than a drop of vermouth swirled in the shaker and dumped out is too much.

I had an acquaintance who was a bartender for a few years. When Jägermeister started getting popular, I asked him what it was - his answer, paraphrased was "reformulated and rebottled Vicks 44D". After he filled the next order, he put the bottle in front of me. I took the lid off, sniffed it, and put the lid back. Accurate description.

Yes, a martini can be made with vodka or gin. But if someone orders a “martini” without saying more, that’s gin. If you want it made with vodka, specify. Just another schmuck in traffic - Billy Joel
