smschulzPeaty Scotch Lovers - what are your favorites?
As a new Scotch drinker I am trying different ones and sometimes I crave the Peat vs some of the other smother Scotches such as Mcallen (which I like too

).
On the Peaty side I just finished a bottle of Ardbeg 10 > LOVED IT.
So I picked up a bottle of Coal Ila 12 > It's good but not as intense as the Ardbeg.
That's OK too and I like it.
So what are your favorites?
I have not tried the other Ardbegs such as the An Oa,Uigeadail or Corryvreckan but heard they are pretty good.
So what say you Peat-heads?
Cheers!

ME TOO! HAHA! But seriously, for peaty goodness there is Laphroaig & then everyone else, in my opinion. Ardbeg is ok, and Lagavulin is good, but in more limited situations (in my opinion). Another really good peaty whisky is the Bowmore range, especially the 15 year old "Darkest". Caol Ila (pronounced Cull EE-lah) is also pretty good, though it's not super complex, what's there is very tasty. It's used in almost all blended Scotches (Johnnie Walkers, Dewars, etc).

HarrisonLLCLaphroaig is about as peaty as it gets. Lagavulin 16 is my go to for when I need to be punished. My wife says I tend to pour the really peaty stuff when my day was so good I need to be punished. Like the monks of old would flog themselves.

I generally do not like peaty - but I do like Oban.
Wouldn't consider it as such.

pbramlettI like Oban but Laphroaig is like drinking iodine to me for some reason. Maybe the same issue as Cilantro tasting like dawn detergent.

hberttmankLaphroaig Quarter Cask is my favorite but all Laphroaig Scotch is pretty good. And yes I like to get every last drop out of the bottle.

BRLI too really enjoy Ardbeg 10 as well as Lagavulin. Laphroig certainly sets the bar for peat and while I can appreciate the quality, I just haven’t sprung for a bottle yet even though it’s pretty reasonable. All in all I’ve got to be in the mood for an Islay but I’ve yet to taste one that I don’t like.
Not a peat but my wife picked up a nice Speyside bottle for me for our Anniversary, a BenRiach 12 triple sherry cask. It’s one of only 18 bottles in the state of MN.

rekstromI like a good peat bog, though I tend to prefer a sherry finish most days.
I like Lagavulin 16 year most, it is perfectly balanced. But I have liked Ardbeg, Laphraoig, and Oban too. I think Talisker 10 is another really good balance.
Lagavulin will be my main peated Scotch.

C L WilkinsPeaty scotch is not for every one. It truly is an acquired taste. For example, the first time I tried Talisker it tasted like mecurochome, with a hint of brake fluid.
