US House passes short-term funding bill to avert government shutdown before midterm elections
The 370-48 vote extends current funding levels and gives lawmakers more time to negotiate a full-year spending deal.
On Tuesday, the House voted 370-48 to pass a short-term funding bill, sending the legislation to President Donald Trump for his expected signature to avert a government shutdown.
Senate lawmakers previously passed the measure, which maintains current government funding levels through Dec. 11, effectively punting broader fiscal negotiations until after the Nov. 3 midterm election.
House Freedom Caucus members, including Rep. Chip Roy and Rep. Andy Harris, opposed the bill over funding for Planned Parenthood and the absence of a ban on hemp products containing THC.
Using "suspension of the rules," House Speaker Mike Johnson bypassed procedural hurdles and secured Democratic votes to achieve the two-thirds majority needed in the narrowly divided chamber.
This stopgap measure defers work on 12 appropriations bills until after the election, as Democrats and Republicans remain deadlocked over a proposed $1.5 trillion military budget versus the $1 trillion allocated this year.

Got to wonder how this wound up needing 2/3 majority and Dem votes. Senate, I get it with filibuster etc. but the House? Anyone know?

BOATTRASH1these guys have all of these officious rules and fancy sounding procedures, but it seems like they really don't matter. They can change them or suspend them any time they want.

Using "suspension of the rules," House Speaker Mike Johnson bypassed procedural hurdles ...
Johnson brought the funding bill straight to the floor, skipping the standard Rules Committee step. This shortcut limits debate and bans member amendments, but it raises the bar to pass the bill from a normal majority to a two-thirds supermajority.

architectIt seems our elected representatives (of either party) are for anything except being held responsible for their actions!
