I really REALLY hate that the dope abusers have made it so that legit folks in need of pain management are treated like criminals by doctors and pharmacist, etc. I suppose most of it is government regs enacted to slow the sales/use of oxy or whatever. But still.

It sucks.

But the good news is that knee replacements have come a long way recently, and are reportedly much improved compared to even just a few years ago. There are also some cool new options with stuff like synthetic cartilage or lab-grown cartilage implants.
One of my coworkers always walked with very noticeable limp from bad knees. He went on an international assignment so there was a year or two we only spoke on the phone. COVID ended the international assignment and he returned to Houston mid-year.

I didn't think about it the first time he went skiing in Colorado this year, but when he went the 2nd time I asked him how he could ski with his knees. Easy as he got them both replaced when he first got back to the US (age 54 at the time). Before a day of lawn work and he used to end up crippled for 3 days, and a day of skiing would cripple him for a week. Now, zero pain and he's wondering why he didn't do it sooner. Last weekend was his 4th ski trip this ski season.

It really is bad and makes no sense at all but the laws are passed like they do gun laws that just make the ninnies passing them feel good.

The other part of the equation is Purdue Pharma who marketed to physicians and told them Oxycodone was not addictive with pain patients. Add in a few sociopathic physicians who want to have Porsches in their garage and you have a recipe for disaster. If your legit pain management doc{usually an anetheiogist} is audited they better have a solid drug testing program in place. There are effective pain managment programs in existence but they are not really advertised and marketed.

It's the pendulum swinging back. 30 years or so ago, there was a huge push to treat pain...any pain was bad. It was labelled the "5th vital sign". Providers were being sued for not giving out enough narcotics.

Now, the push is for no narcotics. I was in a meeting just yesterday asking us to start putting in peripheral nerve catheters to treat longer term pain vs. giving patients a few days of narcs.

It's silly. Narcotics are good things. No...they are great. They serve a purpose and should be used when needed.

And regarding Purdue? The only they are guilty of is practicing capitalism. They scored big with "the 5th vital sign". Good for them. Nope, let's not blame the people who allowed themselves to get addicted to opiates and let's not blame the providers who knew damned good and well that opiates are addictive (any undergrad pharmacology course will tell you that) and let's not blame the judicial system for allowing BS lawsuits to go through, nope...let's blame "Big Pharma", the outfit that makes the widgets that everyone wants, needs, and is required to receive. Roll Eyes

Yeah, it's a fucked up country we live in.

I am on Hydrocodone/Tylenol 10-325 through my pain management doctor for chronic pain and two weeks ago took the annual urine test two weeks ago and was notified today that i failed due to Codeine.
I have not knowing taken anything with Codeine in it. Was asked if i had possibly taken some old cough syrup with Codeine in it which i have not.
Anyone know what might cause this to happen. None of my meds have changed and have no idea what would have caused this.
The week which i gave the urine sample was spring break and i was feeding my daughters dogs and her older beagle is on his death bed and i was crushing three kinds of meds and mixing in his wet food the pain pill was Gabapentin and two others not identified yet. The pa said the Gabapentin does not contain Codeine and if it did hand contact wouldn't register the levels reported.
I resubmitted another urine sample today and i have been going to this same pain management doc for many years and several years ago when putting my urine sample in the cabbie hole other patients samples were in the same area and the thought crossed my mind that if someone followed me in testing two weeks ago and knew they were dirty could have taken my sample and poured it in theirs then filled mine with the dirty sample. So when i submitted todays sample i exited the restroom and went around the corner and asked them to take custody of my sample and gave the previous concerns and of course the nurses got horsey with me and said they sometimes get busy and don't Always get them out before another sample gets placed which breaks every chain of command rule for testing.
Of course i sound like every dirtbag druggie thats failed a urine drug test but i have not taken anything that would cause this high level of Codeine.

Anyone have any ideas of what may cause this.

Best guess is that the lab confused the samples. I would demand another sample, sent to a different lab, as the one they are using seems to be rather slipshod.
