Fool for the City |
My oldest son just gave me a bottle of WhistlePig small batch rye for father's day. I've only had rye a few times and I'm not sure if I can drink it like I drink my single malts and bourbons. Any suggestions will be appreciated greatly. Thank you. You might just give a small amount over ice a try.....can add a bit of water if needed. The ryes frequently have a sweeter taste than does many bourbons(corn).

I prefer rye in my manhattans. Add a good sweet vermouth, a dash of bitters, along with a cherry. One of my favorite cocktails. I'd go with an old fashioned or a whiskey sour. I follow Anders Erickson's recipes. These go to eleven.

Rye is perfect for a Manhattan. The fish is mute, expressionless. The fish doesn't think because the fish knows everything.

I can only drink rye in a cocktail. As others mentioned, Manhattan or old fashions are quite tasty with a good rye whisky. I had a drink in Boston called a Ward 8, it was Rye, orange juice, lemon and grenadine. Absolutely delicious. I shall respect you until you open your mouth, from that point on, you must earn it yourself.

No, not like Bill Clinton |
Manhattan Ingredients: 2 oz Rye, 3/4 oz Sweet red vermouth, Dash Angostura bitters, Maraschino cherry (Garnish) Preparation: Stirred over ice, strained into a chilled glass, garnished, and served straight up. Served: Straight up; without ice I prefer Luxardo cherries though

WhistlePig is a good rye IMHO. Try it straight or with a small amount of water or ice to see if you can get used to the taste, only then try it in a cocktail. I prefer whiskey sours made with rye insdead of bourbon.
