Most cruise lines have their own travel insurance, which may include medical. You can also opt to get insurance thru a 3rd party provider. There are many out there; you just need to shop around - for next time.

If you are military and have USAA, you can use their provider - Travel Insured International, IIRC.

Another benefit of Sigforum membership. I'll remember this when I go on a cruise or maybe take a vacation overseas.

"It did not really matter what we expected from life, but rather what life expected from us. We needed to stop asking about the meaning of life, and instead to think of ourselves as those who were being questioned by life – daily and hourly. Our answer must consist not in talk and meditation, but in right action and in right conduct. Life ultimately means taking the responsibility to find the right answer to its problems and to fulfill the tasks which it constantly sets for each individual." Viktor Frankl, Man's Search for Meaning, 1946.

My wife and I picked up COVID (we think) on a cruise in April. Go to the Dr. onboard? No thank you very much. We quarantined in our room and had room service drop it off at the door.

It sucked and ruined the cruise naturally, but we didn’t go home with an eleventy billion dollar bill.

OP’s case sounds much worse than ours, though. I probably would have gone in that case.

A young person sees the world as a still picture, immutable. An old person has had his nose rubbed in changes and more changes and still more changes so many times that that he knows it is a moving picture, forever changing. He may not like it--probably doesn't; I don't--but he knows it's so, and knowing is the first step in coping with it."

If you travel outside of the US buy travel insurance!!! A couple of years ago, my wife and I were taking a cruise to the some islands off the coast of Fla. when through no fault of anybody she fell and broke her hip. She had to airlifted back to Tampa, Fla. after spending a night in the ship's ER and taking an "interesting" ambulance ride in an inland ambulance. None of this was covered by medicare. Luckily before we left my daughter had bought trip insurance. We were not out of pocket a penny. Last I heard the bill was just over $85,000.
