LEO in my town fatally shot this a.m.
This sucks. R.I.P. Officer Herndon.

Mount Holly Police officer killed in shootout; man charged with murder

A Mount Holly Police officer died Friday morning after being shot while responding to a breaking and entering call just before 3:30 a.m.

Officer Tyler Avery Herndon, who had been with the department for less than two years, would have turned 26 on Sunday.

An outpouring of support from the community, fellow officers, and other emergency responders offered tried to bring comfort to Herndon's family and fellow officers. Mayor Bryan Hough sobbed as he asked for prayers from the community.

“Pray. Pray for the police officers who were there, who rode with him in the ambulance, who I can’t even imagine what they’re going to go through,” he said.

“We are so sad,” Hough added. “It’s emotional and so sad for his family, for the other officers and for him. Just senseless.”

Herndon was one of two Mount Holly Police officers, as well as a Gaston County Police officer, to respond to a breaking and entering call at Mount Holly Car Wash and Arcade on Beatty Drive around 3:30 a.m. Friday, according to a police.

Herndon was shot during a shootout between the breaking and entering suspect, 24-year-old Joshua Tyler Funk of Mount Holly, and police officers.

Funk was booked into Gaston County Jail without bond on a charge of first-degree murder. He was later transferred to the Cleveland County Jail for safekeeping.

Funk also was injured in the incident. He was treated for what police described as minor injuries at CaroMont Regional Medical Center in Gastonia.

In 2019, Herndon was recognized by Fox 46 for his effort to build better relationships between officers and civilians. Herndon would introduce himself to civilians throughout Mount Holly, and on some occasions, he bought gas and food for people in need.

Funk will face charges and is expected to make a first court appearance Monday in Gaston County. At the first court appearance, a judge will make sure Funk understands the charges against him and address the issue of bond.

Gaston County Jail officials made the decision to transfer Funk to a different county, a standard practice when dealing with someone accused of killing a law enforcement officer, said Gaston County Sheriff Alan Cloninger.

"That is to keep down any perception that my deputies may treat him wrong," Cloninger said.

Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police cruisers, with lights flashing and sirens wailing, led Herdon's body along Interstate 85. Law enforcement and public safety officers from throughout Gaston County stood along interstate overpasses and saluted toward the motorcade as it passed by.

This is sad to read

I remember this Officer and the first time I spoke with him.

For some reason either the ME for that county was not answering or we were covering for them.

Anyhoo, I was working the overnight shift, and the call came in. I cannot remember what the death entailed but I do remember him. (Plus we didn't get to much from Mount Holly)

He was very polite and professional but uncertain since it was his first time calling it in to our office.

We got through it.

Remembering my days on FTO and being a rookie I hooked him up for the next time with some cheat sheet forms.

RIP Officer Herndon
Thanks for stepping up to serve
Prayers out to family and friends

It is senseless to kill a young man over a bunch of damn quarters. RIP young Officer. Nothing I can imagine justifies this.

My thoughts as well. Heart breaking. He is the same age as df #4. I can’t fathom his family’s grief.

You’re a lying dog-faced pony soldier

He probably got an "Attitude adjustment" and he'll get more where he's going.

Rest in peace Officer Herndon. Your sacrifice will be honored by your community, your loved ones, and your brother and sister officers.
