The story states that the deceased tried to set fire to the man's house the day before. If that was me, I would have stayed awake on the porch all night with an AR-15.

I have interacted with individuals such as the deceased before. They will stop at nothing to hurt or kill you.

My first stint in Houston, I lived in the Heights. There was an arsonist in the Heights that escalated from abandoned/vacant buildings to occupied houses with residents sleeping. I logged more than a few hours with my AR15 sitting by the front window with all of the lights off.
