From Rice’s own course catalog: CHEM 125 001 (CRN: 25669) Afrochemistry

“Description: Students will apply chemical tools and analysis to understand Black life in the U.S. and students will implement African American sensibilities to analyze chemistry. Diverse historical and contemporary scientists, intellectuals, and chemical discoveries will inform personal reflections and proposals for addressing inequities in chemistry and chemical education. This course will be accessible to students from a variety of backgrounds including STEM and non-STEM disciplines. No prior knowledge of chemistry or African American studies is required for engagement in this course.”

It’s probably fulfills the diversity class requirement.

Back in the 80s, I attended a 2-year school, earned an AS degree, then transferred to a 4-year school. By getting the associates degree, all of my credits transferred and all of my classes were accepted as the equivalent class at the 4-year school. The only lower level class that was require for graduation I didn’t have was the then newly required diversity class. There were a variety of classes offered that met the requirement. I think I took African-American Literature.

I strongly suspect that’s what Rice’s Afrochemistry class is, just another option to meet a requirement, just another option to meet a requirement for graduation.

JFK famously said why does Texas play Rice? Perhaps that course is to pump up their football team

Wasn't the original proposed name of Rice, Sam Houston Institute of Technology, at least until someone figured out what the abbreviation would be?

The class does not give any credits for a chemistry major, but does court towards an African and African-American studies minor.

The description noted 'no prior knowledge of chemistry or African American studies is required' and there is no final exam.

The course has little to do with chemistry...counts towards a social studies degree...zero prerequisites required...and there's no final exam. Got it. As a college student, why am I wasting my time and money with such a course?

It won't be the student's money to begin with.
