Sloppy Joe sandwiches
This pretty close to the recipe - I've made it and it is quite good but again I acquired the taste growing up.
Worth a try if you choose to make it.

The Maid-Rite is not greasy.
It's how it is made.

What makes that different from sloppy Joe’s? The texture or the seasoning or both?

Sloppy Joes are "wet" with the gravy/juice/seasoning.
Maid-Rite if that is what you are referring to is dryer and cooked with seasonings but is still moist but not dripping in juice.
A bit unique but it is an original for sure.

Fun fact, if you go to northern New Jersey and ask for a Sloppy Joe, THIS is what you’ll get:

It’s a triple decker cold sandwich, similar to what would be referred to elsewhere in the country as a “corned beef special”. Usually made with two different meats, like corned beef and turkey or roast beef and turkey, coleslaw, Russian dressing, Swiss cheese, etc. Not sure how this came about up there but it’s very unique to the very northern counties of NJ.

You could get an AWESOME Sloppy Joe at just about any QuickCheck in Northern NJ! Cool

You can also cook up loose meat sandwiches like you do hamburgers and top them however (my favorite of all). They also go well with hot dog buns.

It is the Maid-Rite and was originated in my hometown of Muscatine, Iowa.
It isn't sloppy but rather a dry loose meat sandwich that is spectacular as I recall.
Of course it's been over 40 years since I had an original but I have made the recipe on occasion at home.
It brings back great memories and I still crave from time to time.

The best!!!! Lots of memories of the Boone IA Maid Rite w/ my grandfather. They still have them around.

MaidRite! We still have them in Iowa! 2 in the Cedar Rapids area, I know the Quad Cities and the BEST EVER at Taylor's MaidRite in Marshalltown. After many years, Taylor's succumbed and actually has the travesty of Ketchup being available!

This.
You get any canned or, pre-made item, you can pump it up with a few fresh ingredients and some herbs, and most anything will come out 10x better.

The Maid-Rites I referred to were not the commercially sold ones, which probably are delicious.

Rather the ones I had to eat as a young boy in Elementary School were, indeed, greasy and awful.

I have been to the mid-west several times where I saw Made-Rites on the lunch menus and, though I sure as heck wasn't gonna order one, I saw their pictures all looked big and plump. What we got was a poor imitation of what I saw on the menus.

No sloppy joes for decades but we make our chili thick enough to put on a bun and that makes a nice substitute.

Endeavor to persevere.

I know there are some in the area Moines area and I think Ft. Dodge and Council Bluffs. Sioux City’s closed up.

Now if you ever come around Sioux City for anything stop at the Mile’s Inn. Get a couple Charlie Boys and a schooner of beer. The absolute best. Better than Maid Rite’s. Slap ‘yo mamma good….

I like Sloppy Joes, but I don't cook. I know that canned sauces for them exist, but without the meat. Why are there no canned Sloppy Joe sauces that include the meat? There are soups and chili that have meat in them, why not Sloppy Joes?

ETA: I found a mix that includes the ground beef and have ordered a couple of jars. They have resealable lids so should be OK for refrigerator storage for a few days (16 oz jars, good for about 4 sandwiches, or 2 meals for me). I'll see how they taste.

My wife makes us sloppy Joe's occasionally, like maybe 3 times a year. I absolutely love them, tastes just like I remember my mom's!

My wife makes her own sloppy joes, I honestly don’t know what she puts in it but it’s the best I’ve ever had, I know there is onion, green pepper and some garlic. She does it 3 or 4 times a year, not enough to get tired of it but just enough to get a craving for them after a couple months. Some times we use venison or bison burger.

I don’t eat ground beef that often so I choose sloppy joes for my birthday meal. My wife thinks I’m crazy but she makes a mean sloppy Joe.

Last month the Maid-Rite in Newton, IA closed unexpectedly. The town was in shock! Fortunately, an anonymous good citizen bought it and kept it open. Apparantly, the new owner wishes to remain anonymous. All is well in Newton!

Been a fan of sloppy joe's all of my life...and that has been a LOT of years. I have tried numerous home made recipes, and different canned brands but I find myself always coming back to Manwich Bold.

Yes, it does have a sweetness to it but therein lies the attraction. Smile

Recipe we used growing up. Different than what you normally find but it really grows on you.

1 lb ground beef
1 medium onion
1 can corned beef (this is the big difference)
8 oz ketchup
1 cup water
2 TBS Brown sugar
1 TBS chili powder

Normal brown your meat/onion and drain. Then add the rest to simmer.
The corned beef gives it a unique flavor not found in most sloppy joes.
