Help on console safe - not mech inclined
I'd like to install a safe in my car's center console. I'd use vline for the trunk but they don't have any offerings for the center console.

I'm considering the console vault, something like this: https://www.consolevault.com/H...2016-2022_p_222.html

But I'd like to replace the lock with something from simplex, similar to vline products. Perhaps this one:

https://simplexlock.com/?page=...D=36&productID=9600C

I think I can make it work; maybe just need to cut a wider hole/slot and/or drill some additional holes. I can get a shop to help me out I think.

But can you guys help me out? Confirm that installing a simplex lock in place of the base console vault lock would be easy and painless - no need to replace the door or anything - just remove the factory lock and install the simplex (perhaps with some simple drilling).

I think it's possible but not really sure.

Thanks.

I have the console vault in a Dodge Ram Laramie. Its the one with the 4 digit mechanical lock. I have never felt the need to change the lock, though it doesn’t look like it would be hard. The console vault is easy to install and operate. I have had them on the last 3 trucks.

One thing to consider is that I lock by rolling only one knob out of four two clicks off from the open combo. That way I can quickly unlock it if needed. If you are parking somewhere like a baseball stadium or airport, you can roll all the dials so its nowhere close to the combination.

You might also call Console Vault and ask them if they could install what you want.

I've been happy with Console Vault's in our 4Runner and Suburban, both with the 4-digit lock.

Similar to what Abn556 does, I leave each number rotated one digit off of its correct orientation so it's a quick click-click-click-click to the correct combo.

easy peasy....

if you can operate a keyboard, I see no issue with the vault install;

Despite initial misgivings, voila!! Everything fits as intended. I installed my own, excellent directions & IMHO the materials & design are first rate.

You swapped out the ‘stock’ lock that came with your Console Vault with a Simplex Lock mechanism?

Thanks guys.

I guess I can try the console vault; I'll give the click-click-click-click method a try. But I prefer the simplex if possible - it's what I've been using (and can use the same combo across safes) and I can unlock w/o looking. But click-click may be good enough.

I've looked at the Lockr Down but I'm not sure I'm comfortable with the lid lip. It's probably okay, but I just don't know enough to be comfortable. I like the flush doors of vline and the CV. Probably no practical difference though. I'll think about it some more.

I too have a console vault in my Silverado and have used it for years….no issues! Love it! When I get another vehicle I’ll be purchasing another console vault

Just another thumbs up on the console vault. Have the 4 number version. Have had them in 3 vehicles and will have one in any future vehicles.
