I concur here. I'm the only drinker in the house, so fresh milled beans, proper temp water and pour over.

And some Wild Bill coffee! He is right, French Presses make great coffee.

Tehnivorm does have the best reputation for automatic drip makers. Expensive.

If you’re buying an automatic drip coffee maker, buy one that is certified by the Specialty Coffee Assoc. Their testing insures the water hits the desired 195-205 to extract max flavor from grinds, the water has the desired dwell time in grinds, etc. When I bought my Dad’s fathers day gift many years ago there were only 3 SCA certified and I bought the Technivorm (liked it so much I bought one for myself too). Now there are 15 SCA certified drip coffee makers snd many are 1/2 the price of the Technivorm.

I have this Bonavita and am very happy with it.

The primary reason for selecting it was that it brews at the correct temperature, around 205 degrees or so, and it is reasonably priced (at this performance and feature price-point).

It also satisfies the SCA standards mentioned in the post directly above.

Bed, Bath and Beyond will price match Amazon, and you can apply coupons.

After three Bonavita machines in 2.5 years, I'd not bother with them again.

I hauled my Technivorm to the cellar and now pour 400ml of water into a clean empty kettle to boil. Then slowly pour the boiled water over grounds in a cup-top device. After I drink that first perfect cup of coffee maybe I'll make a second.

I always start with an empty kettle. And only boil the amount of water wanted for the full cup (I currently use a big cup). And never reheat water or leave water in the kettle.

When it comes time to replace my current coffee maker I'll be looking at the SCA certified coffee makers... I'm curious about the Breville Precision Brewer - the idea of being able to dial in a specific brew temp and steep time appeals to my geeky side Big Grin

OXO 9-cup is what I would suggest.
SCAA Certified and 3rd best on their list.
We need a bigger model and wanted a grinding and brew (all in one) feature so we opted for another model (breville bdc650bss grind control coffeemaker)$250
She’s worth it, spend the extra $50!☺️

JBL is my speaker brand of choice. They make a few within your price range. For my money though, the JBL Clip is the best value. Great sound. Small enough to go everywhere. Costs about $50 and there are lots of color choices.

Have used BUNN coffee makers for probably 6-7 years.

This is the one we bought 2 weeks ago...not small, but it is a commercial model and the coffee is excellent(and it will brew nearly 4 gallons an hour if needed).

https://www.samsclub.com/sams/...?xid=plp_product_1_1

and that price is the best I have seen by quite a bit on that model.

My Bonavita is 1.5 years old and works well. Since the city switched to hard water, it does need to be cleaned with vinegar or citric acid every few months.

My wife used to use a French press. I never liked them because they're a PITA to clean up after and they generally produce a "chewy" brew--even with a good burr grinder.

It was my wife that discovered the AeroPress. I was sceptical. Eventually I tried it a couple times and was hooked. The drip brewer has not seen use, since.

Even with using a metal screen, instead of the little paper filters, it's less mess to clean up than a French press and creates a cup with no sediment.

You'll want a good electric kettle to heat the water.

To be fair, the Bonavita is/was at my ex-M.I.L's house. Her water comes from the Salt River, Verde River and Central Arizona Project (CAP, Colorado River) watersheds. The machine(s) never got cleaned, or if they did, it was with a non-approved descaler. For all I know, mom was heating up chicken broth in the thing.

If it were up to me, I'd get her a nice smallish kettle and an HIC Harold Import Co. Coffee Filter Cone, No.2, in red. A 100-count box of #2 filters from Trader Joe's, a pound of dark roast, ground, and a decent jar for the coffee (I use a quart jar with a cork seal on the lid).

I used to be a BUNN fan since the 80's but switched to Bonavita and had it for 2 yrs. Working well and we do a cleanout every 3 months. The BUNN we had just started leaking after 6 months and that was our second one doing the same thing.

I do enjoy the Cuisinart brand of coffee makers. However, my brother swears by the French Press and I may have to do that soon.

I would recommend the JBL speakers because you can daisy chain them on their app to have multiples for parties and get together.
