I have been using the same username and password on my home PC forever. I have also been Using Windows 10 Pro since it came out. When I don't use my computer, I put it in sleep mode. Well today I wake it up and enter my password and it tells me it is incorrect. I notice that my username is now my first and last name and it has always been my first initial and last name. I tried several more times and it kept saying the password did not match and then I noticed it said to make sure my password matched my Microsoft account. The only Microsoft account I am aware of is my Xbox account so I looked up my note for the password to that account, entered it, and sure enough now my computer opened up. I am pretty pissed as I did not do this. Has anyone had this happen? NRA Benefactor Life Member

Wow That's pretty astonishing, even for Microsoft. Look at the bright side: You're now more integrated with The Machine than you were yesterday "America is at that awkward stage. Resistance is futile. MS is really grinding my gears these days. Oh, we promise, Win 10 is the last OS and will receive constant updates from here on. Hey, Windows 11 is out now. Yeah, MS is hell-bent on making you sign into their account/service for EVERYTHING. I think it’s part of this drive to make everything a subscription

Win 10 has a like three options you can use to log into your computer. I believe PIN, local password, or Microsoft account requiring an internet connection. My guess is you used the Xbox account when you initially set the computer up otherwise there would be no way Microsoft could associate that account with your computer. I’ve had the sign in screen change from PIN to password and assumed I miss clicked something. I just changed it back to PIN before signing in and everything was fine.

When I bought my new laptop it required me to have a network connection during initial setup for Windows 11. When it came time to create the login, I had to unplug the cable connection to the router to get it to let me finish the setup by allowing me to skip connecting the account to microsoft. I do have a Hotmail account that I use as my primary email account but don't want to be forced to link it to my computer. So far I've been prompted to "finish" the setup a couple of times after updates but have been able to skip it each time without issue. Who knows what they'll try in the future though.

What I don’t understand is how they were able to do it or link my home PC to my Microsoft account for Xbox. Every version of Windows I ever bought was the disc in a box at the store and the only thing I provided was the key to activate it. I did do the free Windows 10 upgrade way back when it first came out but I don’t recall having to setup an account. My Microsoft account was solely created for my Xbox. So there isn’t anything I can think of on my computer tied to my Microsoft account. I have Office 365 but even that is through my agency. They allow you to install on up to 5 personal devices so the subscription is with my agency email and password. My Xbox and home PC are on the same network. I have tried Googling this and see posts about this happening back in 2015 but that is about it. Very odd and the fact it was done without my knowledge or permission is frustrating. That is what is so confusing to me. My sign on has ALWAYS been local password. My computer is pretty old and I have always built my own computer and will upgrade the motherboard and CPU when needed but even that has been a very long time ago. If other people experienced this back in 2015, which is when Windows 10 was released, then why am I just now having this happen to me? The absolute only thing that has changed recently is that I upgraded my Xbox to the new Xbox Series X, but that was about a month ago and still I never did anything on my computer with it. Is it giving you an option to use your original username? Try clicking on the logout and see if the account you want to use is there.

Nope. It completely changed my username and password. When I couldn’t get in and noticed my username had changed and also after I successfully got in, I rebooted my computer and it is now the new username of my full first and last name. I go into the users settings and that is the only option. I go into system settings and my computer is still named by my old username of my first initial and last name. I see a blue hyperlink in the user settings to change to local password and then I could probably make it different but that is how it was before so I don’t know if I want to mess with it. I was really concerned when I could not get into my computer. Makes me grateful I have a redundant file backup system in place if I had not been able to get back in. NRA Benefactor Life Member

What browser do you use? Is it Edge? Have you ever logged into your X-Box account thru Edge on your PC? Just grasping at straws here.

I only use Firefox. Never even opened Edge except once on accident and closed it. However you may have triggered a link! I also used to always buy all my Xbox games on disc but then a few years ago started doing digital downloads. When Gears of War 5 came out, a digital download would allow you to install it both on your Xbox and the PC version on your computer. I installed the PC version so I would have had to have logged into my account from my computer. My graphics card could not support the game so I deleted it, but that was 3 years ago. That is the only link I can think of. NRA Benefactor Life Member

The cause is most likely a series of prompts agreed to when signing in for a Microsoft service that requires a Microsoft Account logon. However, what has happened (whatever the reason) is a switch from local account to a Microsoft Account. Not entirely uncommon but annoying nonetheless. The solution is to change it back to your local account. https://answers.microsoft.com/...21-9ef2-80974b004dd2 Not going to debate who changed it or why as it could be from many sources and even you say you didn't do anything - yes you did - even by an inadvertent action. No, it's not cool but it's not just Microsoft, Apple does it, Google does it and all are at fault in different scenarios. I can't tell you exactly how to avoid it but just be cautious when logging into an MS account for a service ~ they may ask to "stay logged on" for some convenience reason or hit you with a series of pop up authorizations. Regardless, it can be fixed as annoying as it may be, sorry.

Some of us don't care. Filthy whores. Sure, we will continue to use them, but we will also continue to be disgusted with their behavior. ___________________________________Sigforum - port in the fake news storm.____________Be kind to the Homeless. As long as you continue to give them money, they really won't care how disgusted you may be with their behavior. "America is at that awkward stage. That would throw me for a loop. Most of my online passwords are 30 character random passwords which would include Microsoft. My passwords are entered automatically by my password manager which I can only access AFTER I log on to my computer. This would be no bueno for me. "It did not really matter what we expected from life, but rather what life expected from us. We needed to stop asking about the meaning of life, and instead to think of ourselves as those who were being questioned by life – daily and hourly. Our answer must consist not in talk and meditation, but in right action and in right conduct. Life ultimately means taking the responsibility to find the right answer to its problems and to fulfill the tasks which it constantly sets for each individual."
