Just for the hell of it |
F(*& Apple. So at some point, Apple decided it's iPhone should save pictures in HEIC format instead of the standard JPEG. Looks like I can change the settings to save in JPEG but I need to deal with these now. I took alot of landscape shots in Alaska with my iPhone. I want to dump them into Lightroom and go through them. I have the one I want in a folder on my Macbook. I see different converters online but wanted to know if anyone has any recommendations. I don't want to lose any quality and really don't want to pay for a converter. _____________________________________ Because in the end, you won’t remember the time you spent working in the office or mowing your lawn. I haven't tried it because I don't have an iPhone, but Lightroom is supposed to support importing HEIC directly without any pre-conversion, unless you are running an old version.

Some good info here. https://helpx.adobe.com/lightr...c-files-support.html Scroll down to... "Convert HEIC/HEVC media to JPEG/H.264 while transferring to a Mac or PC" It appears that the phone can automatically convert it its self if configured correctly. Collecting dust.

I tried to import them but Lightroom cannot see the files which means it's a no go. I have an older version of Lightroom that's not cloud-based and just on my computer. _____________________________________ Because in the end, you won’t remember the time you spent working in the office or mowing your lawn. I download 'em from iCloud with a browser. Extract the jpegs from the zip files. "America is at that awkward stage. This is what I actually did but they came as HEIC files. _____________________________________ Because in the end, you won’t remember the time you spent working in the office or mowing your lawn. Climb that goddamn mountain. Jack Kerouac

You can change the iPhone settings to save pictures in JPG instead of HEIF. in iOS 11 or later: 1. Open the “Settings” app on the iPhone and go to “Camera” 2. Choose “Formats” and select “Most Compatible” to shoot photos in JPEG format on iPhone camera 3. Exit out of Settings Assuming you have a Mac Desktop, the app store has a free app called "HEIC Converter to JPEG or PNG". “Agnostic, gun owning, conservative, college educated hillbilly”

Neither my iPhone 6S nor my 2017 iPad have a "Formats" selection under "Settings -> Camera." Must be a newer iThing thing. Good to know as something for which to watch out when we eventually upgrade. Btw: Later versions of the Gimp and the Imagemagick suite are supposed to have HEIC/HEIF support, incl. conversion. "America is at that awkward stage. I was going to change my iPhone to save as JPEG. Then I did the conversions and looked at files sizes. As HEIC files sizes where around 1.5mb as JPEG's they are 6-7mb. I did convert to the max resolution. So after seeing the file sizes, I'm going to continue to let the iPhone shot in HEIC and convert when I need to. It's not often I want to pull pics off my iPhone and need them as JPEG's anyway. _____________________________________ Because in the end, you won’t remember the time you spent working in the office or mowing your lawn.
