Im very happy with patriot sowftware for payroll, its cheap and easy.
You could then get an app for invoicing and do that on your phone, I use timewErks, costs is about $20 a year.
might be worth a look

I'm looking for one, have not found anything yet. QuickBooks for Mac, the 2016 version, would likely be ideal, but can't find a legit copy for sale.

Once-upon-a-time, I recall not how long ago, there was some Unix-/Linux-based open source business software. I don't recall why I was researching it, much less what it was, but it appeared to be decent.

That's all I got on that front.

The fact this problem came out of nowhere, it appears to affect multiple MS-Win versions, and it appears to be related to IE components, suggests to me that what I'd read was correct and perhaps MS has already started removing IE components from MS-Win installations?

We should know pretty soon. If true: There are going to be a lot of very annoyed legacy software users out there.

ETA: We need smschulz' input on this one. If anybody'd know about the above, he'd be our guy.

I use Medlin for payroll. Less than half the cost of Patriot, and it does the job for me.

For the rest of the bookkeeping stuff, I need more than just invoicing. I need to track expenses, parts inventory, etc. QuickBooks does all of that with ease, and has been working just fine for many years until just a week or so ago. I can still use it, but it is really aggravating to try to do something and be roadblocked until I dismiss all the pop-up dialog boxes with script error notifications. I would just ignore them if I could, but QuickBooks will not proceed with anything until you deal with the error notification; I have to click on something in the dialog box in order to dismiss it. Particularly annoying when a single action brings up three of these error notifications, each of which has to be clicked on before I can do anything else.

You might be referring to GnuCash. I have looked at it. It might do the job, but it would take a lot of time and effort to set up for my business model. It seems to be more suited to a business that has a dedicated bookkeeper, where the QuickBooks user interface is more suited for somebody who is not going to take the time to dive into the guts of a double-entry bookkeeping system.
