Tired of Amazon Chinese junk...

Need recommendations for good wire 12-18AWG for projects. Single strand automotive type. Red, black...maybe a few other colors.

Thanks

Automotive type wire is multi-strand. Household wiring is single strand. If you want really good quality tinned wire in 12-18 awg in any color you can imagine or want, these two brands. Marine wire is held to a much higher standard than the automotive chinese stuff you're bitching about!

Pacer group, they retail or wholesale

or Ancor marine electrical (Can be bought at a West Marine, but they tax you on it.)

Thanks Jimmy...yes, just looking for primary wire.

That pacer site is perfect.

I found a few sites on my own but they all started at 100ft rolls! Pacer lets you buy 25 ft rolls...nice.

WEST Marine (boating store) sells Ancor wire in 25' spools as well, if you have any West Marine's near you if you don't want to order it online from Pacer.

Aircraft Spruce.
By the foot or by the roll. Colors, different gauges and not Chicom junk, the real deal, MIL Spec., tinned copper w/high temp chemical resistant insulation.
Oriented towards aircraft but lot of other nice stuff there like connectors and wiring tools for wiring properly.

Quality terminals and the tools to install them correctly are just as or more important for a safe and reliable electrical system.

For automotive use, especially the engine compartment, you want the cross-linked polyethylene insulation. It has a higher temp spec than regular stranded wire. It is designated GXL wire. I get mine at Del City or Waytek Wire. Also, due to vibration, I do not solder any connections in a vehicle. I use uninsulated connectors, correctly crimped, then covered with marine grade heat shrink tubing (the kind with the glue inside). You can also use insulated connectors, I just find the uninsulated/heat shrink combo to be a superior connection.

I like the pre-tinned Ancor marine wire. Available at West Marine or Amazon.

Very timely thread.
Since the 7 year old is getting a RZR or Ranger the little ones were feeling a little left out as they would not get to drive.
Got a couple old power wheels for free. I am going to rewire them to use 18v power tool batteries instead of the crap 12v power wheels stuff.

^^^^^^ Your post just reminded me of Tim Taylor on Home Improvement. He was often reworking something for more power, so I just went to YouTube and watched a few of clips. Thanks for the laugh, I've needed it this morning.

There are a bunch of ways to do it I am not much of a wiring/electrical guy but pretty sure have it figured out how I am going to do it.
It will be properly fused, have a motor speed controller, as well as a low voltage cut off so I don’t damage the batteries.
I will be using 18v Ryobi batteries. I found a 3D printed power adapter that the battery locks into and has 2 wire leads out of. Looks to be a nice little piece. I had initially planned to cut my broken drill and use the handle from that and making my own but this will be much cleaner.
This of course will likely lead to upgrades motors if all goes as planned.

Once I get it done I’ll do a post about the project.

If I can find another one for free. I may go even further and completely upgrade the wiring and motors and try it with a 56v battery.

You didn't say what you are using if for, which actually matters, especially temps. For general purpose stuff get ancor, its easily available (even on amazon) and you can get some stuff like a red/black pair that makes running a circuit easy. If its an engine compartment as henryaz says you want GXL wire. If its a car and not engine then SXL which is easier to find will be perfectly fine. Any good auto racing supplier will have both in spools or by the foot. As a practical matter I just get spools, they don't age and you always run out if you buy by the foot. I think the adhesive shrink wrap crimp connector is also with zipties one of the great modern inventions.

If you have not already check out this forum

Remember to modify the wheels with more power the hard plastic will just spin. I screwed bike inner tubes to my son's and it worked great.
