Yeah, that M14 video guy... |
We were out fishing all day and my 10 pound Bichon was so hyper and excited when we came home, he jumped out of my arms, over my shoulder and fell head first on the concrete. I'm 5'9", so he fell at least 5 feet. He yelped and for a moment, he was stunned. After about 5 or 10 seconds he must have seen stars. After about 30 seconds, he got hyper again. After he calmed down, I noticed just a small stain of blood in the hair around his tear duct. I can't find a surface wound at all. His nose is not bleeding, nor are his ears. and he's hyper again. He actually won't stop bothering me for more snacks. He's alert and playful. He was running around the house with his chew toy and seems to be his old self. Should I be concerned? Maybe see how he feels tomorrow and monitor his ears and nose and watch for vomiting? Thoughts? Tony. Eye on the Silver Lining |
Vet visit, imho, if not tonight, then tomorrow. Just to be sure. And I’d limit his hyperness with a kennel or a leash, in order to keep a close eye on him. __________________________ "Trust, but verify."

Monitor for vomiting and personality changes. That's likely what the vet will do. No CT scan (for human kids) unless something changes. Check his pupils for symmetry and reaction to light. Bruce "The designer of the gun had clearly not been instructed to beat about the bush. 'Make it evil,' he'd been told. 'Make it totally clear that this gun has a right end and a wrong end. Make it totally clear to anyone standing at the wrong end that things are going badly for them. If that means sticking all sort of spikes and prongs and blackened bits all over it then so be it. This is not a gun for hanging over the fireplace or sticking in the umbrella stand, it is a gun for going out and making people miserable with." -Douglas Adams “It is just as difficult and dangerous to try to free a people that wants to remain servile as it is to try to enslave a people that wants to remain free." -Niccolo Machiavelli The trouble with fighting for human freedom is that one spends most of one's time defending scoundrels. For it is against scoundrels that oppressive laws are first aimed, and oppression must be stopped at the beginning if it is to be stopped at all. -Mencken

My gsd jumped into a still opening suv hatch and caught her eye level. She had typical signs of a concussion, vomited, appeared dazed, lethargic. Went to the vet and xrayed her face. Ended up ok after taking it easy for a few days

most dogs are a lot tougher than we people can even imagine.. One of my rules in life is don't believe everything they tell you. About 6 years back my now 12 year old dog ate a pound and a half of pure cooking chocolate... did not effect him at all..... he's over the years eating everything 'they' tell you is bad for a dog. ^^Regarding dogs being tougher than we imagine, that's what I figured. His pupils are the same size, he's not sensitive to light and he's stilll playful this morning. No blood coming from the ears, eyes or nose. He's eaten twice since the fall and no vomiting. I had him sleep in my bed last night and all was well. One of his favorite sleeping positions is on his back with all 4's up in the air. When I went to sleep, he was curled up next to my leg. When I woke at 3am for the bathroom he wasn't there. Took me a minute to realize he was sleeping next to my head, on his back with all 4's in the air. I'm keeping a close eye on him over the next few days, but he seems to be fine. We do a daily 2.5 mile walk, so I'll see how he does today. Thanks for all the advice and suggestions. Tony. I’d still have the vet take a look at him. Be a shame if spending a few bucks now could give you peace of mind and/or catch something subtle that could cause problems for him in the future. But that’s just me and my dogs and may be overly conservative.

A schnauzer leapt off a 12’+ bridge. Wirehair Fox terrier off a couch & down the landing of our tri-level onto tile floor, about 9’ (down to the split level). Both times, dogs were dazed for a minute, but resumed normal activities.

His Royal Hiney |
One of the things I learned was to train my dogs not to be hyper when they first see us coming home. The reason this is important is because it causes the opposite in anxiety levels when they see us leave. We did this by purposefully ignoring them when we first come home even when they were actively trying to get our attention. After a bit, then I motion them to come over and we greet each other. The training hasn't ruined them. In the morning after we all wake up even in the same room, they're still happy to see us and greet us good morning. "It did not really matter what we expected from life, but rather what life expected from us. We needed to stop asking about the meaning of life, and instead to think of ourselves as those who were being questioned by life – daily and hourly. Our answer must consist not in talk and meditation, but in right action and in right conduct. Life ultimately means taking the responsibility to find the right answer to its problems and to fulfill the tasks which it constantly sets for each individual." about 5 minutes after adopting our pup, she jumped out of the cart at petsmart & landed on her head. I felt like the biggest ass in the world. She made it 11 1/2 years. He's fine. If there was nothing off after the 1st 5 minutes it was just 'damn, that hur....SQUIRRIL!'
