The Bishop Of Death |
That happened a number of years ago and I don't remember much of the details. The KKK (I think or it could have been some Nazis) wanted a permit to have a parade in some small town, in the South I think. There was a huge uproar about the thing, and a Jewish attorney or maybe the author of the article, came out in support of them being allowed to have their march. The thing that has stuck in my mid over the years is that his defense was based on the first amendment and that speech that we don't like is the kind that has to be vigorously defended. Because if it isn't then eventually speech that you agree with will be suppressed. Under Construction

You're probably thinking of the Nazi march in Skokie, Illinois from 1978. The case is National Socialist Party of America v. Village of Skokie, and resulted in a Supreme Court ruling that's considering one of the foundational legal precedents on freedom of speech. Skokie is the most famous, since it went all the way to the Supreme Court, but there have been a number of similar incidents all over the country over the decades. The ACLU and other civil rights attorney groups have repeatedly represented various neo-Nazi and white supremacist groups when they've been denied march/protest permits, suing to protect their 1st Amendment rights, even when the attorneys themselves don't agree with the content of their messages.

I believe that's it. The name Skokie sounds right. I remember that the town name was similar to the Oklahoma town of Muskogee. Under Construction

And, in the end, they decided not to hold their rally, their spokesman said they had garnered more publicity than they ever would have by merely having their march. ___________________________________________________________________________ "....imitate the action of the Tiger."
