PSA- potential auto insurance savings for age 55 and over
State Farm has a discount if you’re over 55 and take a safe driving course. I paid $25 for an online course that took a couple of hours to watch. In hindsight I could have skipped to the end and passed the test. I will save about 10% on my auto coverage for 3 years, and then I’ll have to do it again.
This is a no brainer, and I’m kind of pissed at my State Farm agent of 30 years for not telling me about it. I went with my brother this morning to his State Farm agent and that’s where I heard about it.
I’m sure State Farm isn’t the lowest cost insurance out there, and I really need to shop my whole package, but in the mean time this is a significant savings.
Other carriers may have something similar. It’s worth asking about.

Thanks for the tip, Lou. I'll ask my agent about that.

Does this involve installing an app on your phone that tracks you?

Many carriers will give you a discount for taking a safe drivers course, GEICO, Progressive etc...

No, although I think they have something like that as well.
This is simply completing a safe driver class and you get a discount for three years.

Does that include course you take as a result of a speeding ticket, where they don't report to insurance if you take the online traffic school? Not sure I want to disclose that, though I recently did it to keep a lid on the ticket.

Sent a text msg to my broker, asking whether Travelers does something similar.
Both wife and I have the "Safe Driver" notation on our Florida licenses. I guess that plus six bucks will get a cup of coffee (it used to be a dime).

Slight swerve off topic...
My parents would talk about earning one's way up the economic ladder and not apologizing for one's success. When they were first married in the 1950's their big extravagance was on Saturday morning they would spend a dime for a cup of coffee and share it.

News to me, but will pursue. Any listing of resources other than AARP? Not a member, do NOT want to get on their radar.
Agent confirmed this was applicable in MS. Terrific, that's about $400/year they sure as shit never let you know about. Where do I go for that refund for 6 years?
Looks like they actually have a link at the National Safety Council site for easy access to the course for MS and other states.
Thank you, Lou!! That's pretty honest of ya....This message has been edited. Last edited by: Georgeair,

Thanks for the tip. I will be turning 55 this April. I will avail any and all discounts available for 55+.
We used to be with StateFarm for over 10 years. But my rate just kept on going up each year (no accident, no claims). They said it's my location (Las Vegas). Switched to AAA couple of years ago because for the EXCACT same coverage, they were cheaper. But our rates went up this year's renewal. I have to get a new quote from StaeFarm.

Hey Lou, Can you tell me what class you took for $25 that qualified you? I just called my agent and I'm trying to make my Motorcycle Safety Instructor Certificate work but if it doesn't or I need something for my wife I'm looking for an affordable option. Thanks

Not Lou but the link in my post has a dropdown that seems to include UT.
I'm pretty sure if you are both drivers on a policy, you'll both need this.

We had a meeting yesterday with our State Farm agent, not the one we typically deal with, but the owner of that office. We like to do that at least every two or three years. She’s sharp and we always feel like we gained something by sitting down with her.
First, she suffered from a serious case of identity theft last year. A woman in Medford, Oregon had her bank account and routing numbers, and her signature. She said that State Farm has identity theft protection that includes a legal team that only handles this sort of thing for…$25/year! Sounded good to us.
That same conversation got us talking about locking up your accounts with the credit services. She told us that there have been cases of identity theft using the names of young children. The accounts of your young kids, or grandkids should be locked too.

GEICO has a program that if you take a Safe Driving course, you save 10%. Been that way for years regardless of age.

This is the one they recommended here, and it ask what state you’re in so it’s obviously not just local.
