With Age (Sometimes) Comes Wisdom
I'm not a patient man. It's my only character flaw (*). So when I found a used drill press that appeared would meet my needs, and save me a bundle of cash in the process, I was ready to scoot over to the other side of town in the first snow storm (**) of the season to look at it. The pickin's have been slim and I didn't want to miss out.

After taking a second look outside, and remembering How Drivers Are in the first couple snowfalls of the season (***), I thought better of the idea and cancelled with the seller.

Even my wife, who is very anxious I not spend $1,000 on a new DP, said "If it's meant to be, it's meant to be."

Could it be I actually am acquiring wisdom... and maybe even a degree of... patience, in my oldish age?

(*) That's my story and I'm sticking to it!
(**) And it really is a snow storm. They actually under-forecasted it!
(***) How is it people appear to completely forget how to drive in snow from season-to-season?

Sounds more like experience than wisdom to me. That is particularly true of the snow thing. Of course, experience comes with age as well so I might be splitting hairs.

Regarding "***", people here never learned how to drive in snow in the first place.

We don't get snow very often here (down in the valley), but it does seem like people forget how to drive on rain-wet roads during the few weeks that we don't get any rain. When we do get snow (more than 10 flakes == Snowpocalypse), the whole place comes to a screeching halt.

When I was still working I used to take a vacation day on the first one or two snowfalls each year. Not kidding. First couple of snowfalls and you're taking your life in your hands being on the road. (More so than usual.) It occurred to me that if I used to think it wise to do that, what kind of sense did it make to go out in this stuff when I didn't have to?

I’d call that good judgement, rather than wisdom, though they’re probably close cousins.

I’m reminded about the old saw about good judgement:

Good judgement comes from experience. Experience comes from bad judgement.

You are in a area known for mega industrials. A drill press is the most abundant yet basic if machine tools. They are everywhere up there. You should be able to locate a very good quality drill for little money.

It's like you were here, today!

Agree it was *wise* to not have gone out on the roads here, today.

If the DP is to be yours, then it will be there when the stupid *ss drivers frickin' recall what it is to drive on winter roads again!!!

Happens.

Year.
Without.
Fail.
