VBVAGUYI was let go at my job today >>>>>>>
For the past few weeks I have had this feeling and today it was correct. I was employed at this place for almost 16 years and let go today. I have been given 21 days in deciding a choice of either resigning and I will be given 6 weeks severance pay or being terminated and collect unemployment. I have not decided yet. I truly believe and have Faith that God is in control when he closes one door, he opens another door that he has for me that is better. Thanks for reading and listening. God Bless !!!

Rick LeeGood luck. I've been laid off and I've been fired. Each and every time it has led to something way, way better. Yeah, there might be some pain in the interim, but this is the time to find the really right next gig.

old rugged crossDon't know whether to congratulate you or offer condolences.
I agree about God providing new opportunities.
Curious about the company and why they are parting ways with you. Are there more employees involved?

911BossDitto what ORC said, is this good or bad? If you are comfortable sharing, for what reason?
Sounds like a layoff with U/E benefits would probably be more $$ in the long run.

K0ZZZI was laid off a couple months ago. Also given some notice before my last day.
Then 2 days prior to my final day the email came out: All severance agreements are canceled, there were to be no further pay outs to anyone. A lot of people had been laid off previously and their payments were stopped also.
Screw 'em...

dking271Don’t know what state you’re in or if there are any other people involved at the company being given the same choice or if it’s just affecting you. There is also the question about wether or not your actual position is being eliminated. All of those things could impact unemployment benefit eligibility.
Like others have stated, many times this ends up being a blessing.

preten2bSorry to read you're going thru this. I've had this happen more than once as companies get bought or re-invented, and it sucks. I was fortunate to get picked up each time, and hope for the best for you as well. Chin up!

birddog1I’m sorry to hear this my friend. You’ll come out better in the long run. On September 9th my company terminated almost 60 of my fellow sales reps across the country, 4 of 12 under my boss at the time. They said it was performance based but that was a load of crap. My boss resigned over it because none of them were given any indication that their performance was subpar. Two of the four have landed better jobs already, and I’m confident you will as well. Good luck to you.

mrvmaxWell, I do know that a former employer of mine would take people in to HR and tell them they were terminated. But, if they wanted to resign they would let them and would give them 4-8 weeks of pay and most if not all took that option. I always assumed if they resigned it would lessen the chance of the employee suing for wrongful termination or discrimination. I am sure one of the lawyers here can chime in on that one.
Hopefully this will lead to better things and you will find employment quickly.

If you “voluntarily resign” they can replace you immediately. If you are laid off then you have a case for age discrimination if they quickly replace you with someone younger.

blueyeBack in 1989 I was laid off from a job that I had planned on retiring from with 13 yrs seniority. Stayed home feeling sorry for myself. Near the end of 1990 my wife received a great promotion from her job but she had to move to Texas for it. Once here in Texas, I jumped from job to job until I scored a great one in telecommunications and that was over 20 yrs ago. Happily retired with great benefits and pension for over 4 yrs now.
I never thought I would move cross country in my life but I did and never looked back. Good luck to you.

Not a lawyer but as I recall, in NY at least, employers rates for unemployment coverage were based on claims experience so paying severance in lieu of unemployment can be financially beneficial depending on the company’s circumstances and track record.

WoodmanAmiable of them to offer choice. Resignation and severance along with full disclosure will look strong on any resume over termination.
The job market is absolutely hopping right now. Add to that, so few people have real skills.

Batty67Good luck. I truly hope this works out for the best, and as others have noted--it often DOES.
I was laid off in 2012, 2016, and early 2021. It is painful and you can't help but take it personally. Having stated the above, getting laid off is NOT a bad stigma for future employment in my experience. It can and does happen. Best of luck in your professional career.
