Thought about just giving him a pre-paid visa card. He'll be on a road trip when I see him on his birthday.

Any other ideas? He's started the process of getting rid of stuff he doesn't need anymore.

He recently got hearing aids. He carries a pump and tester with him for his type 1 diabetes.

Do the Visa gift card. They are one-size-fits-all ! However, add a very personal, heartfelt letter with the birthday card.

Or, a Series 70 1911 Smile

If he doesn't have one already, maybe a dash cam so he can record his adventure?

How about a nice money-clip / knife combo?

You can have it engraved with a loving sentiment, and he will be able to have your gift along with him every day.

Look at 'The Ridge Wallet'. No knife, but they look very cool, functional and well made. You can include a gift with it to up the gift $ value.

I wish I'd bought my Dad a ride in a B-17. I think experiences will last much longer than stuff.

At 70 years old, I bet the gift he'll treasure the most is to be able to spend as much time as you can afford to be with you and your family.

"It did not really matter what we expected from life, but rather what life expected from us. We needed to stop asking about the meaning of life, and instead to think of ourselves as those who were being questioned by life – daily and hourly. Our answer must consist not in talk and meditation, but in right action and in right conduct. Life ultimately means taking the responsibility to find the right answer to its problems and to fulfill the tasks which it constantly sets for each individual." Viktor Frankl, Man's Search for Meaning, 1946.

For my 70th my daughter cooked me one of my favorite meals. She and her family spent some time with me and Mrs. 610. That meant to me than anything else could have.

don't laugh. I guy I knew in CT hit 68. We went over to his place to have dinner a few weeks after his birthday. His son stops buy and asks how he likes his present. His son had acquired 10 viagra pills for him. His wife and him became plumb tomato red. giggled and laughed. Then spent the rest of the night over lemon cello regaling everyone at the small get together about the virility that had been regained.

Forget the prepaid card. If he cannot buy what he wants at 70 that is a serious problem.
Do something personal for him.

I went to tacky a while back. But I've discovered no one ever turns down money. Sons and DILs each just receive a $100 bill. I wouldn't be offended if any turned it down. They don't. For whatever reason, they seem to like it or at least find a place to use it.

Take him to a quiet place and spend all day with him talking about things you remember growing up as a child that were special.

Then end the day and buy him a dinner he wants even if it is only hamburgers.

You have to do something special, a memory for both of you. When my Dad turned 70 I took him on a glider ride, he loved it. It's one of my best memories, too, so it was a great day.

I go thru this every May 21.
The call and a happy birthday speech.
What would be nice if they would show up for a few hours with some steaks and beer and a visit.
