Selling Firearms and Stereo equipment
The time has come to get out of this HELL HOLE of IL. I don't like the writing on the walls.

I plan to liquidate almost everything and move west, maybe Idaho.

Some of the items I want to begin selling are Firearms and Stereo equipment.
The Stereo equipment is all from the late 70's and was top shelf when I bought it new way back then.GAS power amp and pre-amp, Stainless faced Mitsubishi pre-amp and matching tuner. ESS ( pacific stereo branded speakers with Heil transformers.
Where is a good choice to advertise and sell Stereo equipment?
I don't do Facebook!

When selling Firearms is a dealer a good option or should I try and sell on my own using Gun Broker?

Don’t know about the stereo equipment.

The firearms, however…………an FFL dealer will give you wholesale, or less. You will be disappointed. The market is pretty soft right now. You might try Guns International, I’ve had pretty good luck there. Gunbroker kinda blows.

If you have patience, GI is good. If you just want to unload your firearms quickly, then an FFL may be the way to go.

Good on you for wanting to exit IL!

I’ve only sold one firearm in my life so I’m not much help there but I’m glad you’re escaping this hopeless state.

And what firearms do you want to sell?
I still have never owned a Garand.

If you have a bit of patience left, there's "rumor" that Classifieds is coming back. Wink

If the Classifieds are coming back, I’d wait for that!

The obvious limitations on selling through or to an IL gun dealer suggest one of the auction sites instead, and I'll add that you'll attract a wider buyers market, and avoid possible issues selling items that fall under the IL gun registration/ban law. An FFL can simply ship such items to a free state and avoid problems, at least that's my understanding.

As for Schmelby's question, I'd ask Para if it's OK first.

Are you retiring or hoping to find a job wherever you land? In either case, my heartiest congratulations.

I'm in San Diego and found a couple excellent deals on a Marantz 2252B and same era, upper end Technics turntable (different sellers).

I might recommend looking there and seeing what stereo stuff there sells like otherwise, keep that stuff - it'll elevate your entertainment during the winter.

I'm no facebook fan but Marketplace is where the action is. Does not have to be a pain just use good sense and run your ad your way.

Lon, you probably know the Chicago coppers on here. Maybe they'd have interest in some of your firearms and other Chicagoland members...I know there are several. I don't know what the rules are selling to other FOID holders in IL.

Good luck with everything and I'm happy to hear you're getting out.

Audiokarma is a good forum for stereophiles and has a place to sell stereo equipment. You need to be a member to sell, though. Yearly membership dues are $25.

stereo stuff may go on eBay, I have sold a piece or 2 there,
or find a local shop that deals with older equipment, tho they may not pay much,

sounds trite to say 'do your research' but in your area it may pay off to do so,

re the firearms,

on the online side, depends on what you are selling,

gunbroker is good, figure 6% or so as their take,
Guns International is I think $20 a listing, for 90 days or so,

both have their + and -, and are good for some types of firearms,

bog standard stuff , like Glock 17 etc, the market on Gunborker is flooded,

do you belong to any local ranges or sporting type groups? that may be a place to sell,

or take them with you, Idaho is a very gun friendly place, friend moved there a couple years ago, they have gunshows/swap meets in his church parking lot after services,,

If you don’t want to do any work, then sell through your local dealer and take at least 20% off the final prices for their commission fee. Selling them on GB takes a lot of effort on your part if you want to maximize potential returns.

It is a terrible time to sell used firearms, prices are low. Gun stores will give you about 40-50% of what they will sell for (not what you think it is worth). You are always better off selling yourself.

If you try Gunbroker, watch the fees and figure them into the sale. If you have no feedback, you will not get as much interest. I also notice that sellers who do not accept credit cards will not get as much interest. Unless of course you have some high demand stuff.

Agreed… and too bad! I am exploring the same thing, and having no offers. I considered them part of my retirement fund - too bad!

Of all the ideas here, this one makes the most sense!

Spending nearly my entire life in IL, I forget that the rest of the country is a helluva lot better. Good catch, lyman!
