What books or other resources would you turn to for your girlfriend, wife, or daughter to read in order to assist them with getting proficient for personal carry?

When I first began to carry, the most recommended books of that time were Ayoob's "In the Gravest Extreme" and Cooper's "Priciples of Personal Defense".
Are these still good suggestions?

The person I'm asking for is considering this and is not at the point of going for range training yet.

Part of the reason I'm asking is that as a male and older, my recommendations might not be the best picks. So ladies among us, I would be most interested in knowing what materials helped you the most.

I don't mean to sound sexist with this inquiry, just want the best outcome of recommendations.

Hi,
Find another lady that shoots and also carries and have her talk with your female friend. Maybe a women only NRA class? Hearing from other females about why they carry, what they carry and how they carry is a lot more effective in educating/informing and also shaping opinions/views than just about any male written book I can think of...

The Women only training class works well. I have observed a number of these classes and it takes a different type of approach to be successful. Most women are more comfortable with other females learning to shoot a pistol.

Honestly, I'd start with the local news.

https://www.chicagotribune.com/news/breaking/

Granted, it's Chicago, and thing are much different here than the rest of the country, but other people throughout the country are just as violent.

Then ask her / them if they really want to be a helpless victim, or be in a position where they can actually do something about their own personal safety / safety of their children...

I'm not using this to advocate "fear mongering", but just to see the reality of the world we live in. And that there are some seriously bad and evil people out there that have no reservations about doing harm.

Then look at local ranges/ schools near you. I'm sure many of them offer "Women only" classes as a starting point.

That's the website I recommend to ladies that want to learn more about carrying.

She also has a book, if they prefer print media.

No need to convince this person about the need for personal protection. She came to me asking what next, but definitely not ready for the range yet. Her ultimate goal is to carry for self defense.

She is so new to the idea that she has never heard of the "Four Rules of Gun Safety".

So, I'm on the right track thinking the source and the training approach matters. Thank you for confirming this. Definitely keeping these tips in mind when I get back to her.

Please keep any suggestions flowing. I have until Tuesday when I see her again.

+1 for the Cornered Cat website and book.
As a female who carries regularly, I found my biggest challenge was finding holsters (IWB and OWB) that were “just right”. I spent $$$$ on many different holsters until I found the perfect ones for me.

Good thread. I’d love to find a source for females new to carrying concealed. Many of them are cute.

My wife asked for this book for Christmas, she's reading it now (The Most Unlikely Champion) - Asian woman brand new to guns, went on to competitive shooting:

Pew Pew Tactical has some stuff written by the wife of the site host.

Falia Photography on YouTube has some good stuff, mainly holster reviews but some guns too (vids done by a woman).

A few years ago....CorneredCat showed up to take a course from Tom Givens at RangeMasters in Memphis, TN.

Maybe she and her entire group were having a bad day.... But, they were all a "bit off" in many regards. The instructors and minions for that course were not impressed with her at all.

My wife carries a 1911 daily. Without question, she recommends talking with another female about questions or issues. She contends that books and websites usually do not effectively convey the information that females are looking for.

SIG Academy offers a Handgun 101 for women only. 1 day class for $150. They provide equipment. They fill up quickly, and nearly every woman I've ever shot with in an Academy class seems to have started there, and these women have all been strong shooters.

Not a one day trip up to Epping if she's in your neck of PA, but not a bad drive at all. It's a nice weekend getaway.

I read “In the Gravest Extreme” by M. Ayoob soon after I completed my CCW class and think it’s an excellent first book. It’s my opinion that women should read much and shoot more (on the range.)
