CMP 2020 National Matches Cancelled
I shot the National Matches in the ‘70s and ‘80s.
A wonderful experience, living in the “Huts” and shooting 22, CF and .45 in relays of 100+ pistol shooters. Sun, wind and rain with no cover.

Nothing like it!

First time cancelled since 1906☹️

Damn! That’s a long run! Sadly it seems like all the cool things are going to be canceled in 2020. Personally, I’m pretty damn sick of it.

[We need to place the blame where it belongs, China.

They delayed and took care of their own first and kept scientists out for too long because they are a communist govt who cannot afford to lose face.

Well their efforts to save face have caused deaths across the globe! Not to mention trillions in lost wages, failed businesses, failing industries (oil, travel, hospitality).

I look forward to one day competing at Camp Perry on my bucket list is earning a Distinguished badge.

I wanted to go through the years. But family, work, and 2400 miles made it impossible. Now retired, its possible, but I don't really want to now. Trying to keep master class shooting takes too much these days. Besides I legged out years ago in pistol.

This is a fucking disgrace and the CMP should be ashamed of itself. It dishonors the memories of those who sacrificed through service in wartime during all those years the matches were held, and defeats the very purpose of the existence of the DCM/CMP and the Matches.

They were scheduled for July 12th and they cancelled the matches? Wow. Ridiculous.

I’ve lived within 10 miles of Camp Perry my whole life, they have no idea what devastating effect this will have on our economy. We are a tourist based area anyways but the matches were sure income for all the local businesses, just very sad to here they’ve canceled them already.

Tis a shame for sure.

I have great hopes that CMP will successfully replace NRA as the National Championship governing body

I disagree. China deserves their share of the blame for not taking action sooner, for their draconian approach in silencing early whistle blowers, and for not sharing information sooner...but China didn't dictate our response to the virus.

The dominant left established mass media that fanned the flames of hysteria for ratings and to serve their political agenda, many political leaders who subscribe to the philosophy of "never let a crisis go to waste" (especially in an election year) as well as leaders concerned with criticism of their crisis response, combined with a large portion of weak-kneed Americans prone to panic rather than calm resolve and lacking the grit to face adversity...China didn't dictate that... "we" own the U.S. response to this crisis.

I could understand event organizers making changes, possibly even delaying it...but not cancelling it.

I used to be actively involved with an organization that is in the middle of planning it's 50th year celebrations for this year, which included a citation from the legislature, various celebration events, articles, shows, and a reunion of past members. The first event was scheduled to take place just a few days from now. It takes time to organize and plan these things...and now our plans are on hold. Partly due to the state's Stay at Home orders, as well as concerns from both our members as well as the general public.

It is nothing short of a travesty that an American event with the legacy of this National Match has been cancelled, more so, this far in advance.

It not the virus or the Chinese its our exagerated hyped up fear of the virus.

Shameful how we all cowtow to this bs.

So few people even attend a protest against this insanity.

Especially so far in advance. But what is the average age? 70 years? 2/3 of them could be wiped out.

It's not a kissing contest, it's a shooting match. The competitors don't have to hold hands...don't even have to breathe on each other. They could shoot with masks and gloves if they felt the individual need to.

I've never been to the event but, no doubt, there is a social component to it and the camraderie and good natured fun might be slightly diminished should the decision to implement restictions be made...and it would suck not to be able to see the faces behind the masks, hug, or even shake the hand of those who didn't feel comfortable doing so. Those healthy enough and not afraid to do so could shoot and participate in the activities that they were comfortable in participating in.

Whatever happened to "the show must go on"?

Long time National Match competitor. I'm saddened that the tradition will be broken after all these years. My son and I made a lot of memories, not just the shooting but Vendors Row, dinner at favorite places, the times we stayed in the barracks for Small Arms Firing School and our time in the pits.

It will be a tough time for Port Clinton. NRA left a few years back which meant fewer people attending Perry, I'm saddened.

generally speaking, the competitors are ~6' apart, or close,
your score guy is sitting next to you,
maybe a couple feet to the side
in the pits, it's usually 2 folks per target, so no real way to keep 6', but you are not holding hands either,

the 3 years I went, it was 4 of us in a hut, and 3-6 huts worth of folks hanging around outside it,

PX or whatever it is called was sometimes crowded, sometimes not,

commercial row had lots of folks as well as the North store,

and yes, a few great places to eat locally,

we also used to take a day and ride the Jet Express over to Bass Island and hang out
