For the first time in I-can't-remember, I'm not cooking at all. It's just The Beautiful Girl and me, we have lots to do in the gorgeous central Florida weather, and we have leftovers in the 'fridge.

I bought a turkey, stuffing makings and other stuff in case my parents wanted to travel, but they decided to defer. Mom is 84 and dad is 93. I totally get it.

So, Happy Thanksgiving to all! We will be celebrating after things settle down, I imagine.

Just my wife, son, and his girlfriend. Smoked turkey breast from one of our favorite bbq places, along with their gravy and their smoked brisket tamales. I'm making the sides- a family special deep fried stuffed potato dish, sausage/cornbread stuffing, southern green beans, and a chocolate chess pie from our favorite pie place. Will open a riesling and Pinot Noir for the table.

Just the two of us this year as our daughter and family couldn't come here for Thanksgiving and as we couldn't go to Canada for Canadian Thanksgiving.

So our meal to give thanks today will be...

Herb stuffed Cornish hen with a bacon poncho, one each
Yorkshire pudding
Mashed potatoes & gravy
Roast parsnips
Roast Brussels sprouts with bacon, dried cherries and with a balsamic reduction drizzle
Roast asparagus in bacon fat and garlic
Bourbon orange whole cranberry sauce
Rose d'Anjou a'plenty

No desert but there are plenty of snacks and other beverages to enjoy.

It's just me and the cat, so not cooking much.

  • A small turkey breast, that will only take about 1.5 hours in the oven.
  • Good ol' Pillsbury crescent rolls
  • honey-glazed roasted carrots (honey, some garlic powder, thyme, rosemary and gobs of butter)
    Honey glazed carrots recipe
  • sausage stuffing (sausage, cornbread, butter, herb stuffing, chicken broth, cream of chicken soup, salt & pepper)
    Sausage stuffing recipe
  • enough turkey gravy to drown everything

A little early for pictures. Very traditional dinner, although this year, it’s only my wife and I. Turkey breast, mashed potatoes, sage and sausage stuffing, green beans (not casserole). My wife is working on a pumpkin pie right now.

There are some great looking and sounding Thanksgiving dinners planned out there. Best to all my extended family in the Forum. Best to you, para, if you’re lurking!

I have three racks of nice baby back pork ribs in the smoker as we speak. With that will be baked beans with pieces of beef brisket in it. A cream spinach bake with cheese and balsamic vinegar. Pita bread. For desert will strawberry cheese cake ice cream.

Will be very soon fixing the mandatory HOT Bloody Mary to help watching the smoker do it's thing.

Pretty standard Thanksgiving fare for us.
    -Stuffing
    -Green bean casserole
    -Garlic Roasted potatoes
    -Carrots
    -Sauer Kraut
    -Cranberry sauce
    -Beet Salad
    -Pineapple casserole

I made some mini crab cakes and remoulade for an appetizer.
Getting ready for the oven. I bake my crab cakes not fry as a rule.

The difference this year is I did the Turkey on the Kamado. I used my normal herbs and stuffed with onions/carrots/some apple. I sort of Hybrid roasted/smoked. I wanted a more crispy skin so I cooked at a higher temp around 300 instead of a super low and slow. I used some hickory wood with the charcoal.

Came out pretty amazing for being an experiment and never having done a Turkey on "The Joe". Nice smokey taste but still pretty traditional in skin and what not.

It was damned good. I’ll do it again, that’s for sure. The garlic/salt/pepper crust was awesome.
