Amusing mangled/hybridized sayings
I heard this one from a co-worker a couple of years ago, and it still makes me chuckle, as I think he was sincere:

"He's all smoke and no mirrors!" ("Smoke and mirrors" + "All hat and no cattle," or "all sizzle and no steak.")

This one was uttered by a contestant, referring to himself, on the show Forged in Fire this weekend:

"Live and let learn." ("Live and let live" + "Live and learn.")

My really stupid ex used to try to compliment me by saying "you never seem to amaze me". Of the two times she was nice to me, that's what I got.

I believe it was Cam Newton who said a couple years ago after a tough stretch of losses - speaking about overall team effort:

"we all gotta look each other in the mirror..."

and he is also credited with:

"not to let the cat out of the hat..."

He is a press conference Gold Mine.

My wife is famous for this.

"Whatever rocks your boat!" Mixup of "whatever floats your boat" and "don't rock the boat."

"You're drinking bananas." Mixup of "You must be drinking something" and "you're going bananas."

Being married to a foreigner can be fun.

From a ESL friend at work:

"We can finally see the light at the end of the haystack"

"You can lead a horse to water but that don't make it right"

"Half of one, six dozen of the other"

I enjoy doing it on purpose and puzzling people.

My most commonly used ones are probably "busy as a one armed beaver" and "easy as cake".

Don't cross your chickens before they cross the road.

The Six of one, a half dozen of the other is a phrase often used, at least around here, to mean indecision, uncertain choices, or a who knows situation when commenting on a choice or outcome when it's some sort of toss up. It's common to hear and every one knows exactly is meant by it. (Ha, that's funny, knowing exactly what is meant about an inconconclusive situation and outcome, I love the English language).

My first wife got into a dispute with a repairman. When I got home, I asked what was the problem.

She said, “He misunderstood something I heard.”

Luckily, I have enough willpower to control the driving ambition that rages within me.

When you had the votes, we did things your way. Now, we have the votes and you will be doing things our way. This lesson in political reality from Lyndon B. Johnson

"Some things are apparent. Where government moves in, community retreats, civil society disintegrates and our ability to control our own destiny atrophies. The result is: families under siege; war in the streets; unapologetic expropriation of property; the precipitous decline of the rule of law; the rapid rise of corruption; the loss of civility and the triumph of deceit. The result is a debased, debauched culture which finds moral depravity entertaining and virtue contemptible." - Justice Janice Rogers Brown

Or maybe she thought you were stupid enough to think she was complimenting you. Big Grin

I always like saying: it's like switching horses in the middle of the creek when you don't have a paddle.

"It did not really matter what we expected from life, but rather what life expected from us. We needed to stop asking about the meaning of life, and instead to think of ourselves as those who were being questioned by life – daily and hourly. Our answer must consist not in talk and meditation, but in right action and in right conduct. Life ultimately means taking the responsibility to find the right answer to its problems and to fulfill the tasks which it constantly sets for each individual." Viktor Frankl, Man's Search for Meaning, 1946.
